DEAD YELLOW SANDS, a one-man piece written and performed by Graham Weir under the direction of Bo Petersen, will make its bow on the stage of the Alexander Bar and Café's Upstairs Theatre this April.
In the hour-long show, Weir tells tales of places that were and people he knew. The evocative description of DEAD YELLOW SANDS reads: "As a small boy at the funfair I let go of my father's hand. I was so caught up in the distracting sights and sounds I did not realise I was lost until somebody switched off the lights."
Weir wrote a number of one-man plays in the 1990s, including BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS, which won the Vita Award for Best New South African Play. This is his first one man play in some time. Weir and Petersen worked together on his one-man musical LETTERS FROM PATIENT ESSOP, which played over a number of years to great critical acclaim. Weir is perhaps best known for his song writing and performances with Not the Midnight Mass, which he founded with his sister in 1988. Not the Midnight Mass still appears together, most recently at the Artscape Theatre where performed at the 2015 Fleur du Cap Awards. Weir also co-produced and wrote the music and lyrics for NOAH OF CAPE TOWN, South Africa's first a capella musical. He also recently played the title role of KING LEAR, working with Guy de Lancey on a highly acclaimed production, one of the last to be staged at the Intimate Theatre. De Lancey will design the lights for DEAD YELLOW SANDS.
