DANI AND THE LION, Daneel van der Walt's cabaret of stories and songs, follows up its Standard Bank Ovation Award winning run at the National Arts Festival with a run at the Alexander Bar's Upstairs Theatre in Cape Town this August. Directed by Nicholas Spagnoletti, the hour-long production was originally directed by Jason Potgieter, with musical direction by Roelof Colyn, a role that David Lubbe has taken over for the 2016 production.
The Den is a cabaret bar at the end of the world that's always been plagued by the inevitability of being shut down and its resident act, Dani and Leo, are giving their final performance at the little dive they've come to call home. To celebrate and mourn their last night in The Den, Dani and Leo have put together a special set of gutsy, sad and blisteringly funny blues songs and stories.
BroadwayWorld reviewed the production during its National Arts Festival run, with South African contributing editor David Fick saying that 'DANI AND THE LION is cabaret as it was meant to be':
It is a boldly original and playfully post-modern work, with a finger on the pulse of social buzzwords and popular culture, a strong sense of pastiche and a touching sense of self-awareness.
DANI AND THE LION runs from 1 - 6 August. Tickets cost R100-R120 and can be booked online at the Alexander Bar website or purchased at the bar. For telephone bookings and enquiries, call 021 300 1652. Alexander Bar & Café is situated at 76 Strand Street in the Cape Town city centre and can be followed on Facebook and Twitter.
