DANI AND THE LION, Daneel van der Walt's cabaret of stories as songs, began its run at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown today, with performances continuing through 10 July. Directed by Nicholas Spagnoletti, the hour-long production was originally directed by Jason Potgieter, with musical direction by Roelof Colyn. For this run, Van der Walt is joined on stage by David Lubbe.
A gutsy, deeply original cabaret, DANI AND THE LION is quirky and funny, but also heartbreakingly sad. Van der Walt's original songs, as well as a few covers, take you on an often hilarious and sometimes sad journey through love and life. The show is peppered with stories that are both wacky and moving, all brimming with humanity and empathy. The show carries an age restriction of PG14.
Van der Walk is best known for her role as Magenta in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, which is only one entry on her impressive theatre résumé . She also works as a television presenter. Lubbe is an accomplished classically trained pianist. Spagnoletti is best known as the playwright of LONDON ROAD and as the owner of the Alexander Bar Theatre in Cape Town.
DANI AND THE LION runs at the Albany Cabaret Club on 6 July at 16:00, 7 July at 12:00, 9 July at 10:00 and 10 July at 10:00. Tickets can be booked through the National Arts Festival website.
