Play Club, Cape Town's Book Club for Theatre Lovers, will host the second annual Halloween edition with a reading of Noël Coward's "unworldly comedy", BLITHE SPIRIT. Play Club is Book Club for Theatre Lovers. It is a monthly initiative aiming to build a community among theatre lovers. This brings a well-established New York theatre platform, where the simplicity of a script reading becomes an intimate forum to discover plays, debut new talent and allow for engaged discussions. Play Club has played host to some of South Africa's top and up-and-coming actors, directors, educators, filmmakers, producers, playwrights, composers and critics, all mixed with theatregoers who share their passion for the theatre.

BLITHE SPIRIT was first seen on the West End in 1941 and has enjoyed many revivals on stage in London, as well as on Broadway. A film was made in 1945, with a musical adaptation wi titled HIGH SPIRITS, with a book, lyrics, and music by Hugh Martin and Timothy Gray, premiering in 1964. While conducting research for his new novel, Charles Condomine invites the implausible medium Madame Arcati to his house for a séance. Consumed in a trance, Madame Arcati unwittingly summons the ghost of Charles's dead wife, Elvira. Appearing only to Charles, Elvira soon makes a play to reclaim her husband, much to the chagrin of his new wife Ruth. One husband, two feuding wives and a whisper of mischief in the air make for a great deal of fun in one of Coward's most loved comic plays.

BLITHE SPIRIT will take place on 26 October in a popup venue and bar at studio G14 at Stadium on Main in Claremont, Cape Town. As with last year's Halloween edition, when Agatha Christie's AND THEN THER WERE NONE was read, attendees are asked to dress in costume in the period of the show: 1940s England. In trying to keep Play Club accessible to everyone, a suggested donation of R50 to help cover costs of running the event, as well as purchasing scripts, is all that attedance at the event will cost. Bookings for BLITHE SPIRIT are open and space is limited, so e-mail join@playclub.co.za if you would like to attend the event.
