The Artscape Theatre Centre is holding auditions for its forthcoming production of John Kani's play, NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH, which he himself will be directing.

Set in Port Elizabeth during the time of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH is the story of Sipho, a man who has to come to terms with his past. His dealing with the loss of his wife, the death of his son and coming to terms not only with the injustices of the apartheid era for the man on the street, but also the challenges of post-apartheid South Africa reflects on a personal level the political dramas that were played out in the TRC.

The three roles available in the play are Sipho, Thando and Mandisa.

Sipho is a 62-year-old Xhosa man, the Assistant Chief Librarian at the Port Elizabeth Public Library where he worked for almost 33 years. The casting is open to younger actors with the ability to portray the character physically and vocally, rather than solely to age appropriate actors.

Thando, in her late 20s, is Sipho Makhaya's only daughter, a teacher who also works as an interpreter at the Amnesty hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Mandisa, in her early 20s, is Sipho's English-born niece who has lived in England all her life and has come to South Africa to inter her father's ashes.

Auditions will be held by appointment from 10:00 - 17:00 on 20 January 2016, with call-backs to follow on 22 January. The commitment period for the production is 11 April - 9 May 2016.

For the audition, actors should prepare any short monologue of 2 - 3 minutes long. Actors should have a good working knowledge of the play and its characters. The producers are looking for actors who are fluent in speaking or writing and reading in isiXhosa or isiZulu.

Auditions need to be booked by 18 January 2016. Interested applicants may forward their short CV with headshots to Simone Rossouw, the School Liaison Unit officer at Artscape Theatre Centre either by email, by fax (021 410 9845) or via hand delivery at the Artscape Stage Door.
