Artscape Theatre in collaboration with Afrovibes, supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is set to present the much awaited ALLBASTERS, a hip hop production that kicks off Artscape's "12to12/06-76" 40th-anniversary commemoration of the Soweto Uprisings.
ALLBASTERS tells the story about the shared history and language between South Africa and the Netherlands, with regards to exploring and interrogating the intersection of hip hop music and culture in the countries in relation to one another. ALLBASTERS is a derivative of the Afrikaans word "albasters" which plays on the idea that we are "all basters" - "coloured" or "mixed" - an idea that for some is a "harde neut om te kraak". The production is built on the opinion that we are more than what we claim to be, grounded in the subliminal friendship between Afrikaans and Dutch language and culture.
Stories and ideas will be shared in music and song and the award-winning Hemelbesem will introduce and collaborate with acts including celebrated Dutch hip hop artists Skaffalau aka Helberg and Marikit, Afrikaans music icon Gian Groen, SA's Got Talent winner and opera singer James Bhemgee, female hip hop artist MC Yoma, Afrivisie winner Herman Kleynhans, veteran Cape Town hip hop artist, Linkris, ATKV's Tannie Francis Brown, Boland Godfather from Die Hooflig, and many more.
ALLBASTERS will be performed at the Artscape Theatre from 15 - 16 June. Tickets, costing R80, can be purchased at the theatre's box office or at any Computicket outlet, or online at Computicket.
