A BRAND new restaurant, Arts Café, has opened its doors at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town. The fully licensed 140-seat eatery offers good food at reasonable prices. 

Current/upcoming events and shows:

The Phantom of the Opera – 22 November 2011 to 14 January 2012 (± 2,5 hrs)

BROADWAY’S longest running musical plays triumphantly to Cape Town audiences. This Andrew Lloyd Webber smash hit has experienced sell-out seasons around the world. Through clever staging techniques, the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as the Phantom, who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House, magically unfolds on stage to mesmerise audiences. Tickets range from R125 to R425 at the Opera House.

Cape Dance Company – 30 November to 11 December 2011 (± 2 hrs)

ONE of South Africa’s top dance companies presents an outstanding repertoire of neo-classical ballets and premiers a new work, When Dawn Comes…, by acclaimed US choreographer, Christopher L Huggins. This season also includes the re-staging of Mr Huggins’s Enemy Behind the Gates and Michelle Reid’s God’s Waiting Room. Tickets range from R100 to R160 at the Theatre.

Dreamcatcher – 3 to 10 December 2011 (± 2 hrs)

THE Cape Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA) students present an engaging performance with dynamic and highly talented young artists in dance, drama and song that is sure to keep you inspired and uplifted! Tickets range from R80 to R90 at the Theatre.

Cancellation: Lunch Box Concert – 8 December 2011

CAPE Town Opera has cancelled its scheduled Lunch Box Concert due to the sudden passing of opera singer Phikolomzi Mangqobe. Cape Town Opera apologises for any inconvenience caused.

CAPA Third Year Graduation – 8 December 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)

STUDENTS of the Cape Academy of Performing Arts’ (CAPA) full time programme, stage their choreography and performance works. Tickets range from R40 to R50 at the Theatre.

2011 Jazzart Dance Joint - 8 to 11 December 2011 (± 2 hrs)

COME and join in Jazzart Dance Joint’s annual makietie. This is the time for uncles and aunts, nephews and nieces to strut their stuff on stage! This is pure organised chaos not to be missed. Tickets cost R50 at the Arena.

Noddy’s Special Treat – 9 to 22 December 2011 (± 1 hr)

NODDY wins two tickets for a train trip to the seaside, and he can take a friend with him. Everyone wants to be his best friend so that he will choose them to go on the trip. Come and meet Noddy and his friends, Big Ears, Tessie Bear and Martha Monkey. The naughty goblins, Sly and Gobbo, will be there too, making a nuisance of themselves. Tickets range from R40 to R50 in the Theatre Foyer.

Coppelia – 16 to 24 December 2011 (± 2 hrs)

BASED on the well-known story by ETA Hoffman, Cape Town City Ballet offers dance entertainment at its very best. The story incorporates romance, intrigue and deception, transporting audiences to a world of folklore and witchcraft, with a happy ending. The annual fairy parade takes place on 23 December 2011. Tickets range from R100 to R130 at the Theatre.

Other People’s Lives – 16 & 17 December 2011 (± 1,25 hrs)

THIS showcase presentation is a ‘trial run’ of a new play, depicting two volatile couples. Their lives get intertwined due to a shocking incident that forces them to deal with the aftermath of violence and come face to face with their own innate cruelty. Tickets cost R30 and are available at the Arena door.

The Birds – 22 December 2011 to 15 January 2012(± 1,5 hrs)

TWO humans, fed up with their living conditions in Athens, set out to find another human who has transformed himself into a bird and joined the birds who are building a sublime, peaceful city in Cloudcuckooland. Tickets range from R60 to R100 at the Kirstenbosch Open-Air Theatre.

Insight Evening for The Italian Affair – 28 December 2011 (± 1,5 hrs)

CHOREOGRAPHERS of Cape Town City Ballet offer patrons a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the process to create a brand new dance work. Tickets cost R30 at the Theatre.

The Italian Affair – 31 December 2011 to 8 January 2012 (± 1,5 hrs)

CAPE Town City Ballet presents a brand new work which is set in sensuous Rome. Film director, Guido Contini, struggles to find harmony in his professional life as he engages in relationships with his wife, mistress, muse, agent and mother. Tickets cost R30 at the Theatre.

Madame Touxflouwe – 5 to 14 January 2012 (± 1,25 hrs)

Come spend some time in the Touxflouwe Estate on the top of the hill. The Madame of the estate may have been dead for hundreds of years, but she still takes the time every night to make sure the servants aren’t slacking in their duties. It is a macabre comedy that is brought to life through puppetry, shadows and animation. Tickets range from R50 to R65 at the Arena.

The Comedy of Errors – 10 January to 18 February 2012 (± 2,25 hrs)

THE Bard meets Bruce Lee in The Comedy of Errors. This new production is inspired by the world of classic 1970s Kung Fu cinema. Two sets of twins, separated at birth, unwittingly find themselves in the same city, unleashing a series of uproarious misunderstandings, in this most farcical and youthful of Shakespeare’s comedies. Tickets range from R60 to R150 at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre.
