The Artscape Theatre Centre enters 2012 with a jam-packed programme for the entire family. The fair for the next two weeks includes two open-air shows, an ice ballet, an international hit musical, a macabre comedy and ballet.

The Phantom of the Opera – 22 November 2011 to 14 January 2012 (± 2,5 hrs)

Pieter Toerien’s production of Broadway’s longest running musical ends on 14 January 2012. Through clever staging techniques, the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as the Phantom, who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House, magically unfolds on stage to mesmerise audiences. Tickets range from R125 to R425 at the Opera House.

The Birds – 22 December 2011 to 15 January 2012(± 1,5 hrs)

TWO humans, fed up with their living conditions in Athens, set out to find another human who has transformed himself into a bird and joined the birds who are building a sublime, peaceful city in Cloudcuckooland. Tickets range from R60 to R100 at the Kirstenbosch Open-Air Theatre.

The Italian Affair – 31 December 2011 to 8 January 2012 (± 1,5 hrs)

CAPE Town City Ballet presents a brand new work which is set in sensuous Rome. Film director, Guido Contini, struggles to find harmony in his professional life as he engages in relationships with his wife, mistress, muse, agent and mother. Tickets cost R30 at the Theatre.

Madame Touxflouwe – 5 to 14 January 2012 (± 1,25 hrs)

COME spend some time in the Touxflouwe Estate on the top of the hill. The Madame of the estate may have been dead for hundreds of years, but she still takes the time every night to make sure the servants aren’t slacking in their duties. It is a macabre comedy that is brought to life through puppetry, shadows and animation. Tickets range from R50 to R65 at the Arena.

The Comedy of Errors – 10 January to 18 February 2012 (± 2,25 hrs)

THE Bard meets Bruce Lee in The Comedy of Errors. This new production is inspired by the world of classic 1970s Kung Fu cinema. Two sets of twins, separated at birth, unwittingly find themselves in the same city, unleashing a series of uproarious misunderstandings, in this most farcical and youthful of Shakespeare’s comedies. Tickets range from R60 to R150 at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre.

The Nutcracker on Ice – 19 January to 12 February 2012 (± 1,25 hrs)

THE Imperial Ice Stars return for their fourth season to Cape Town with a performance that will be as athletic, as astounding, as adept, as beautiful and as enchanting as all the previous shows. Come and experience the magic of one of the world’s best-love ballets performed on ice in the comfort of the Artscape Opera House. Tickets range from 100 to R350 at the Opera House.
