Alex Tops to Play 'Brad' in Fugard's THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW

The Fugard Theatre in Cape Town recently announced that their production of Richard O'Brien's THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW would be extending to the 12th January 2014. Alex Tops, Resident Director and understudy for the role of Brad will be stepping into the role for 2 weeks. Paul du Toit returns to the role on 1 October.

After graduating from the Waterfront Theatre School in 2007, Alex Tops has performed in many theatre productions such as Maynardville's THE MERCHANT OF VENICE and THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, as well as a production of HAMLET at Artscape, directed by Roy Sargeant. Alex appeared in shows such as ASSASSINS, directed by Fred Abrahamse, which re-opened The Space Theatre on Long Street and THE GREAT GATSBY at Spier Wine Farm, directed by Peter Joucla. Alex has also had the privilege to perform in the grand scale opera LOST IN THE STARS, directed by Tazwell Thompson and SHOW BOAT (which travelled to the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris). He co-wrote and directed ABSOLUCY, a sold-out one-woman cabaret show at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in 2011 as well as co-writing and starring in COOKED, a hilarious live cooking show. He has acted in many television and online commercials and is currently recording character voices for the animated series LIKE LERATO. Alex is the production manager for the TAKALANE SESAMI National Roadshow.

THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW is directed by Matthew Wild and has taken the Mother City by storm, receiving rave reviews across the board playing to full houses each night since opening on the 10th July. The show's superb all-South African cast is led by Brendan van Rhyn as Dr Frank-N-Furter, Jenny Stead as Janet. Andrew Laubscher's Riff Raff has received huge acclaim. The live onstage band accompanies the cast every night as they belt out the iconic hit songs "Science Fiction/Double Feature", "Dammit, Janet!", "Sweet Transvestite" and "The Time Warp" and has audiences rocking in their seats night after night.

Participation packs, for sale at R20 each, are a huge hit and make for even more fun as theatre goers throw confetti, wave glow sticks and snap their plastic gloves as instructed by the Narrator. Dressing up for every performance has proven very popular amongst audience members - with fishnets and feather boas a plenty! There are official dress-up nights on 18 October; 15 and 29 November; 6, 13, 20, 27 and 31 December; and 10 January, when the best dressed audience member of the season can stand a chance to win a weekend away for two courtesy of Travel With Flair. THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW is now booking until the 12th January 2014. Performances run Tuesday to Fridays at 8pm and on Saturdays at 4pm and 8pm and Sundays at 17h30. Tickets ranging from R90 to R230 are available through Computicket or the Fugard Theatre box office on 021 461 4554. Friends of the Fugard benefit from the usual discounts when booking through the box office.
