The hugely popular Cape Town comedian, Alan Committie, goes back to school with his brand-new show, Class(y) Clowns, directed by Chris Weir, in the Baxter Concert Hall, from 23 November to 15 December at 8.15pm, with Saturday matinee performances.
Hot on the heels of hosting the Mother City's favourite winter showcase, the 2018 Jive Cape Town Comedy Festival and the sold-out success of his Love Factually, Committie is ready to hand out top-class laughs. He has gone back to the classroom, to teach himself (and audiences along the way), a few lessons. As 2019 quickly approaches, he reviews the year that was - and what to look forward to - in the comic madness of the year ahead.
The verbally dexterous Committie has been described as having "a flair for thinking on his feet" and "turning something quite ordinary into a hysterical situation". Class(y) Clowns promises to be no exception to this rule. "Verbal hi-jinx and madcap physicality make this comedian a must see," is how Business Day described him.
Regarded as one of South Africa's leading stand-up comedians and renowned master of ceremonies, Committie has hosted six Fleur Du Cap Theatre Awards, nine Jive Cape Town Funny Festivals and seven Sunday Times Top 100 Companies, amongst many others. He is also a multi-award-winning actor whose accolades include a Fleur du Cap Best Actor award for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and a SAFTA (South African Film and Television Best Supporting Actor) award for Laugh Out Loud.
Most recently he was seen in Oleanna at the Fugard Theatre and in early next year, he takes on the title role of Richard III at Maynardville. He also directed The Play That Goes Wrong at Theatre on the Bay.
Class(y) Clown is an 80-minute exploration of what we have learnt, what we still need to understand and how we can keep sane in this age of bewilderment.
Using his experience as a former school teacher, Committie will be re-educating audiences about the hilarious and precariously fragile state of the world. He covers subjects like science, history, geography, physical education, sex education and even home economics. The curriculum includes fluctuating from flossing to fiscal fragility and bouncing between ball-sports and by-elections as everything is covered in this hilarious new comedy show.
"There will be lots of textbook laughs but, be warned," says Committie, "miss this show and you'll be sent off to detention straight away."
Class(y) Clown runs at the Baxter Concert Hall, from 23 November to 15 December at 8.15pm with Saturday matinees on 1, 8 and 15 December at 5pm. Ticket prices range from R120 to R165. Booking is through Webtickets on 086 111 0005, online at www.webtickets.co.za or from selected Pick n Pay stores.
