Des McAnuff collaborated with Townshend on the book, or script, crafting a theatrical experience that expands upon the original story. The Who's Tommy premiered on Broadway in 1993 and became a critical and commercial success.

The story centers around Tommy Walker, a young boy who experiences a traumatic event that renders him deaf, mute, and blind. Withdrawn from the world, Tommy retreats into a world of his own imagination. The musical follows his journey as he encounters various colorful characters, some helpful, others manipulative, who shape his experiences. Through music and fantastical imagery, Tommy grapples with isolation, explores his hidden talents, and eventually finds a path to healing and connection.
