On Saturday, April 1, the Washington Pavilion invites the public to come and enjoy Design Challenge, where children in grades K-12 compete on this year's chosen design theme: The Great Roller Coaster Challenge. School group and scout troop teams will be competing on their ability to design and build a roller coaster out of everyday objects.

The Design Challenge is an annual Washington Pavilion program that aims to motivate and inspire innovation in students through a hands-on engineering challenge. Every year, a new theme requires students to tap into the worlds of science, technology, engineering and math to channel their inner Einstein. The Design Challenge competition is free to participate. Prizes are awarded to the winning teams.

This year's Design Challenge has 49 teams comprised of 160 youth participants. Teams will be competing between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Washington Pavilion lobbies and Schulte Room. Awards will be presented in the Belbas Theater at1:30 p.m. for middle school students, and 3:45 p.m. for K-5 students.

The 2017 Design Challenge event is sponsored by Northwestern Energy and Century Link.
