On October 8 the next Super 2nd Saturday is happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On the second Saturday of each month, our Visual Art and Kirby Science Discovery Centers now feature new, educational and interactive experiences designed to engage people in hands-on and minds-on themed activities, demonstrations and projects above and beyond our everyday programming.
VISUAL ART CENTER ACTIVITIES
This Super Second Saturday, explore creatures both real and imagined in the Raven Children's Studio and the Everist Gallery. Our Creature Feature is inspired by Steve Bormes' 101 invented sea creatures in his exhibition, Deep Sea Imaginarium, to explore the intersection of art and science in Bormes' exhibition of 101 invented fish.
To get ready for their visit to the Deep Sea Imaginarium in the Everist Gallery, kids are invited to make up their own animals in the activity Make-and-Take Creature Masks. Also, join us for a special Undersea Storytime featuring "The Octopus's Garden", written by Ringo Starr and illustrated by Ben Cort, and "The Pout-Pout Fish" by Deborah Diesen, illustrated by Dan Hanna.
Visitors of all ages are invited to explore the intersection of art and science in a Twisted Tour of the Deep Sea Imaginarium. In Twisted Tours, we invite experts from outside the field of fine art to give a unique perspective on our exhibitions. Join Thea Miller Ryan, the Director of the Outdoor Campus, and artist Steve Bormes as they talk about the similarities and differences between fish native to South Dakota and Bormes' imaginary creations.
