The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra closes its 2016-17 season with prestigious soloists and the SDSO Chorus performing what is heralded as one of the greatest works of all time. Bach's B minor Mass at 7:30 PM on April 22 and2:30 PM on April 23 at the Washington Pavilion.
Maestro Delta David Gier says that the B minor Mass is remarkable in its technical mastery, theological insight, and artistic inspiration. "The impetus for the SDSO's programming of this masterpiece was a letter from Lutheran Arts reminding us that 2017 is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Undertaking a performance of this work is a daunting task for any organization but, like any truly great work of art, the more one brings to it, the more one takes away."
Soloists include returning Houston-based soprano Hannah Lu who has performed with the SDSO in 2015 and 2016. Mezzo-soprano Nicole Warner also returns to the SDSO after performing with the SDSO in 2016, and is scheduled to return next season. American tenor Joshua Kohl has been praised for his "firm technique and dynamic phrasing" by the Baltimore Sun. And Grammy nominee bass-baritone Stephen Bryant performs on the program after performing with the SDSO in 2015 for Mendelssohn'sElijah. The South Dakota Symphony Chorus, under the direction of chorus master Dr. James Johnson, is comprised of over 100 volunteers throughout the Sioux Falls community.
