The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) welcomes composer and Vice President of Education with the New York Philharmonic, Theodore Wiprud, on this Saturday's concert, Schumann's Symphony No. 2. Wiprud is a highly-acclaimed composer who has provided the SDSO to perform the world premiere of his piece, Sinfonietta. Sinfonietta was co-commissioned by the SDSO, Dale Frehese, Toos Daruvala, Honey Kurtz, Phyllis Mills, Steven Stamas, and the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
Wiprud graduated cum laude in biochemistry at Harvard and earned a master's in music theory and composition at Boston University. Many of Wiprud's compositions explore spiritual experience and American literature. They are known for the impact they make on performers and audiences, reflecting his interaction with both adult and young listeners as Vice President of Education at the New York Philharmonic.
Also on the concert, the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra performs side-by-side on stage with the SDSO on Rossini's Overture to La Gazza Ladra. This opportunity provides students the chance to be mentored by and perform alongside professionals musicians.
