This performance is based on true stories collected from the National Archives of Singapore. The story is set in Singapore during World War 2 and revolves around an uneasy and unlikely friendship between a Japanese soldier and a local boy. The homesick Japanese solider takes the local boy under his wing as he reminds him of his younger brother back home. However, their friendship invites stares and anger from both the local population and the soldier’s officers. This performance is a powerful, educational drama about survival and courage in times of war.
My Friend, A Japanese Soldier will help students to acquire knowledge of how things were when Singapore was under Japanese rule through drama and puppetry.
