Over centuries, speeches have rallied the crowds and unleashed feverish action, for better or for worse. Like a mighty weapon, words have sparked revolutions and fueled wars. But a speech does not only transform its audience; the speaker himself enters a trance-like state, losing himself in the stream of words.
In It's going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend, choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez explores the nature of fanaticism, the dangerous charisma of speakers, and the sinister mechanisms of manipulating the crowd, in this captivating solo performance.
Inspired by the ultraconservative American televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, Gruwez captures the intense dialogue between speech and the violence that manifests, with precise, menacing movements.
