New to the festival is AFX – Asian Festivals Exchange, which sees exciting collaborations between up-and-coming Asian dancers and choreographers from the renowned Yokohama and Seoul Dance Collections in a series of residencies with T.H.E Second Company and Malaysia’s DPAC Dance Company.
Yokohama Dance Collection 2011’s Outstanding New Artist Mikiko Kawamura escapes the wintry climes of Japan for Singapore’s tropical warmth, in an intensive three-week collaboration with pioneer member of T.H.E Second Company, Liz Fong. Award-winning Korean choreographer Choi Myung Hyun gets inspired by Malaysia’s burgeoning contemporary dance scene, in a rich exchange of ideas and styles with former Cloud Gate dancer and DPAC Dance Company’s Artistic Director Wong Jyh Shyong. Transcending language barriers, they conceive fresh new works that embody the unique colours and customs of their individual dance cultures.
Complementing this exciting programme are performances, technique classes and choreography workshops held at the Goodman Arts Centre over the festival period. Expect a stellar line-up of artists from Cambodia, Thailand, and Denmark, including acclaimed Danish dance artist Kitt Johnson; described by The New York Times as the ‘rare… choreographer who can say a great deal with very little’. The popular M1 Open Stage also returns to wow audiences with the vibrant creativity of young emerging talents, in our dance version of the open-mic session. Cast aside your inhibitions, let’s dance!
