Hugh Jackman Withdraws from Broadway-Bound HOUDINI Because of Time Commitment

Stage and screen star Hugh Jackman has long been slated to return to Broadway starring as America's greatest showman in Houdini. Now according to Variety, the Tony winner has withdrawn from the production, which is now aiming for a Broadway run in the 2015-16 theatre season.

Just yesterday, it was announced that the Hartman Group, the Broadway press agency that was slated to represent the new musical, would close its doors in January 2014. Since then, Houdini producer Scott Sanders told the New York Times that the show is now aiming for a run in the 2015-16 theatre season. He told the NYT: "I'm very supportive of Michael's decision, as I think everyone is, because this is certainly the time in one's life to do something like this. We'll figure out how to successfully transition some of our projects to another firm or elsewhere."

Houdini composer Stephen Schwartz recently revealed thathe hopes the musical will play in Chicago prior to a Broadway run in the 2013-14 season.

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, earlier this year, Aaron Sorkin withdrew as librettist of the upcoming Broadway production Houdini, starring Hugh Jackman. Now in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, he revealed that he's deveoping another musical for Broadway. When jokingly asked if he'd ever write dance sequences into his television scripts, Sorkin resopnded: ' Well, I'm going to be doing a Broadway musical, and there will be plenty of extended dance sequences.'

According to Deadline.com, Aaron Sorkin has withdrawn as librettist of the upcoming Broadway production Houdini, starring Hugh Jackman. Sorkin's schedule, including his commitments involving the second season of HBO's 'The Newsroom' and adapting Walter Isaacson's book 'Steve Jobs' for Sony Pictures, would not allow him time to continue work on the musical.

Sorkin recently revealed some details on the show to the NY Times. He commented: 'Work on Houdini has been underway for a while, with Stephen Schwartz and I meeting regularly - either in New York or L.A. - to map out the show we're doing (also not a biography), move index cards around a board, listen to first drafts of songs and read first drafts of scenes.'

Hugh Jackman will return to Broadway during the 2013/2014 season starring as America's greatest showman in HOUDINI, an original musical. Making his Broadway debut as librettist, Academy Award and six-time Emmy Award winner Aaron Sorkin will collaborate with three-time Academy Award and four-time Grammy Award winner Stephen Schwartz. Directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, HOUDINI is presented by film and theatre producer Scott Sanders and David Rockwell. Mr. Rockwell will also design the sets for HOUDINI.
