Tonight at sundown marks the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, the New Year in the Jewish faith. Schaefer(Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera) as 'Peter,' Jane Pfitsch (Broadway'sCabaret) as 'Jenny,' James Ludwig (Broadway's Spamalot) as 'David,' Lauren Marcus (Little Shop of Horrors, Sharon Playhouse) as 'Amy,' Joseph Spieldenner (Broadway's Les Miserables) as 'Paul,' Peter Reardon (BSC's All My Sons) as 'Larry,' Nora Schell(Spamilton, Triad Theater) as 'Marta,' and Rebecca Kuznick (BSC's Fiddler on the Roof) as 'Kathy.' Featuring a book by George Furth, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, with choreography by Jeffrey Page, music supervision by Darren Cohen, music direction by Alex Shields, and direction by JuliAnne Boyd, Company will begin previews on August 10 and is set to open August 13 for a run through September 2.

On this day in 1976 the first Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof opened at the Winter Garden Theatre starring Zero Mostel reprising his Tony Award-winning role. The production, however, would be short-lived - running a mere 167 performances. Jerome Robbins directed and choreographed the revival.

Happy Birthday, Harvey Fierstein! In addition to Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles and A Catered Affair, Fierstein's Broadway acting credits include playing the mother, Edna Turnblad in Hairspray (2002), for which he won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. He later replaced Alfred Molina as Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Fierstein returned to the theatre when he toured as Tevye, replacing Chaim Topol in Fiddler on the Roof starting in December 2009. On February 15, 2011, he replaced Douglas Hodge as Albin/Zaza in the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles playing opposite Christopher Sieber. He is nominated for a 2012 Tony Award for the book of Newsies.

Today in 2004, Fiddler on the Roof opened at the Minskoff Theatre, where it ran for 781 performances. Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Milkman and Other Tales) by Sholem Aleichem. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances.

New York Musical Theater Festival will kick off its sixth season with a Gala Celebration of its first five years, called BEST OF THE FEST, on Monday, April 20th at 7 PM at New World Stages (340 West 50th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues).
