"John Tiffany's stunning production of Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie - which stars Cherry Jones and Zachary Quinto in career-defining performances - promises to be the most revealing revival of a cornerstone classic for many a year to come. Be prepared to have the breath knocked out of you." - Ben Brantley, The New York Times
Broadway's most unforgettable new production is Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie.
Amanda Wingfield (two-time Tony Award winner Cherry Jones) is a Southern belle past her prime, living with two grown children in a small apartment in St. Louis. Amanda dreams of a better life for her shy and crippled daughter Laura (two-time Tony Award nominee Celia Keenan-Bolger), and so she pushes her son, Tom (Zachary Quinto, Angels in America), to find a "gentleman caller" for the girl. However, the arrival of the gentleman caller (Brian J. Smith, The Columnist) sends shockwaves through the family and causes cracks to form in the delicate fantasies that have kept them going.
A beautiful play full of poetry & longing, The Glass Menagerie has triumphantly returned to Broadway in an groundbreaking & critically-acclaimed new production.
"(5 stars) Tennessee Williams' classic is given a superb Broadway revival in John Tiffany's brilliantly acted, striking production. This shattering and shimmering Glass Menagerie is a must-see." - Daily News
"A thrilling night in the theater. There's magic from start to finish. It's all an alchemy that must be experienced. It is, like the work itself, unforgettable." Associated Press
Fortunately, Williams has once again aligned with the ideal cast and creative team, in John Tiffany's staging of 'The Glass Menagerie,' an American Repertory Theater production starring Cherry Jones and Zachary Quinto that previously played Harvard and opened Thursday night at the Booth Theater.
Like many great stage actresses, Cherry Jones has a magic in person that doesn't translate well. It seems fitting that this performance, and this production, will really exist only in memory - but there it will lodge.
