'The Accelerating World: Speed vs. Control' has just been released and is available on Amazon http://amzn.to/2h7zO7P. This can be a very interesting read and a great Christmas gift.
Have you noticed the world accelerating around you? Do you feel excited, interested, curious, surprised, cautious or even fascinated? Have you wondered about how to cope with this? Then this book is for you.
Over the past five decades, several mysterious and seemingly unrelated events have taken place. Sand has become rare. Species have disappeared at unprecedented rates. Diabetes rates have boomed. Online data thefts have surged. Urbanization and waste have soared. What is happening? Is it globalization? Or is something much deeper taking place, something that the world had never experienced before - a tremendous acceleration?
Why and how has this acceleration been possible? What are the implications of a new accelerating world and does it necessarily lead to a loss of control? The Accelerating World: Speed vs. Control will take you through captivating anecdotes and data analysis in seven areas: Population, Economy, Technology, Data, Environment, Freedoms and Health. From the implications of a world adding a billion more people every 12 years, to global GDP explosion (X10 in a century!), exponential computing capabilities, environmental use or what it means to live in a world of data and individual freedoms. 'The Accelerating World: Speed vs. Control' will take you through some 100 graphical analysis with anecdotes on where the world is and where the acceleration is leading.
But beyond these past five decades, it is the future which is now at stake. Has the time come for key choices to be made, and decide how to channel and control this exhilarating acceleration? With a constructive mindset, various proposals are explored. Including global governance mechanisms to enable the world to cope and regain control of this acceleration.

How hot is a 'low oven'? How much butter is 'the size of a walnut?' Several members of the Corn Island Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) found out when they transformed a stack of heritage recipes into a new cookbook to benefit Farmington Historic Plantation in Louisville.
The recipes-many of them well over 100 years old-were collected by Nell Speed Ream, the great-granddaughter of John Speed, who built Farmington. (The plantation is best known for Abraham Lincoln's three-week visit in 1841.) One of Nell Speed Ream's descendants recently offered use of the recipes to Farmington. Corn Island NSDAR, which had selected Farmington as a historic preservation project, offered to create a cookbook. A committee was formed to head the project; volunteers tested and updated the recipes; a local print-on-demand publisher offered her expertise to design the book; local publisher R. C. Linnell Publishing provided book design services and a local graphic designer developed the cover pro bono-it was a true community effort.
Readers of Speed Family Heritage Recipes will find recipes for salt-rising bread, transparent pie, fritters, and eggnog served by James Speed during his term as attorney general in Lincoln's second administration. The book also includes a short history of Farmington and brief profiles of the women who developed and served these dishes so long ago. Heritage Recipes is currently available on Amazon.com.
About Corn Island NSDAR: Corn Island NSDAR, organized in 2012, is the city's newest chapter. The chapter's missions are historic preservation, veterans' issues, women's issues, and genealogy.
About Farmington Historic Plantation: John and Lucy Fry Speed founded Farmington, a hemp plantation, in 1816. Farmington, with its connection to Lincoln and its 14-room Federal-style brick home, is a popular attraction in the city. It is now part of Historic Homes of Louisville.
Members of the cookbook committee are available for media interviews.
As I scoured the Capital Fringe listings for 2016, two shows caught my interest. While both RAIN FOLLOWS THE PLOW and ROMANOV both musicalize moments in history and showcase some serious songwriting skills and musicianship, they couldn't be more different from one another stylistically. While there is considerable room for both shows to grow, a future life for both of them is definitely possible due to the strong central concepts, creativity and musical bases.
There's nothing like a well done David Mamet play with its verbal sparring, clever dialog and constant exchange of power. But in order to be great the performances need to be so laser focused and on point you could cut glass with them. And while the current production from Theatre9/12 of "Speed the Plow" is on its way to that level, they still need a bit more settling into the roles in order to be fully committed.
The actors of Theatre9/12 present David Mamet's theatrical black comedy, SPEED THE PLOW. This scathing dissection of the Hollywood Industry exposes the sexual dynamics and political maneuvers within this male-dominated 'bizness.' The balance is upended when one of two Hollywood producing partners gets promoted to Head of Production. But the presence of an enigmatic temp worker is the surprising catalyst for Mamet's explosive confrontations.
