As Purlie Victorious enters its final weekend on Broadway, BroadwayWorld is very excited to share an exclusive essay written by Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee's daughter, Hasna Muhammad, who played a key role in getting this landmark play back on Broadway. 

The first installment of THE WRITERS PROJECT will take place on Tuesday, January 30th, 2024 at 7:30PM at Debonair Music Hall.

Produced by Two Soul Fusion, aka Louie Vega and Josh Milan, the mini-album contains six tracks, all with live string arrangements courtesy of the Apple Hill String Quartet and conducted by Leroy Burgess. It’s been a strong year for Toronto theatre. I saw 145 shows this year in Toronto and beyond, and am happy to report that theatre is alive and well. I’ve laughed, sobbed, coughed (discreetly into a mask), and cheered my way through our stages in 2023. Here are some local highlights.

'Genesis' is a solo exhibition by Denver-based artist Robin Cole, showcasing a harmonious blend of science and spirit. Experience the transformative power of Cole's artwork at Gallery 1261 from March 16-30, 2024.

Revered producers and multi-instrumentalists Karriem Riggins and Madlib announced a March 1st release date for YHWH is LOVE, their second album together as Jahari Massamba Unit. The full-length will be the official release for Law of Rhythm, a new record label founded by Riggins and music executive Jae Barber.

A Red Orchid Theatre  has announced the cast and creative team behind the Chicago Premiere of IN QUIETNESS by Anna Ouyang Moench, directed by Ensemble Member dado. 

HBO and Max brands announced a multiyear pay-1 U.S. output deal with A24. Movies included in the pay-1 output agreement include* Dicks: The Musical, Priscilla, Dream Scenario, The Zone of Interest, Stop Making Sense (2023), The Iron Claw, Love Lies Bleeding, Civil War, and more.

Cinderella sings “I wish” as the opening lyric in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s INTO THE WOODS. I wish that every performance of the current production of INTO THE WOODS at The New Jewish Theatre could be seen by a sold-out house, and that they’d be forced to extend the run due to audience demand. It is just that good.

If you have read any of my LAMTA show reviews before, you’ll know that I’m an avid fangirl of their productions. And while I always rave because the raving is deserved, SPRING AWAKENING, as LAMTA’s first performance of a full-scale musical, is extra special and extra rave-worthy. As always, with LAMTA shows, the energy crackles.

News spread quickly among Nashville-area theaterati in January 2016: Denice Hicks would be taking the stage of Belmont University’s Troutt Theater to take on what could conceivably be her greatest theater challenge: Playing King Lear in the Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s production of the Shakespeare tragedy which had opened a week earlier.

Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the San Francisco Symphony in two Orchestral Series programs, November 10–12 and November 17–18, featuring works by composers with California ties: Emerging Black Composers Project winner Jens Ibsen’s Drowned in Light, Gabriella Smith’s Breathing Forests, Salonen’s own kínēma, and three works by Igor Stravinsky.

Billed as ‘A Chilling Night of One Acts,’ the PPA Alumni Theatre Company, has delivered two fantastic productions of well-written One Act plays featuring incredible performances and outstanding direction. Both doolin’s WAITING FOR HECATE and Satterfield and Nonemaker’s THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING SECOND deserve additional productions to find a wider audience. These two One Act plays are among the biggest surprises of the 2023 St. Louis Theatre Season.

Birds of North America Is a brilliantly well produced drama with a quiet, luminous, elegiac quality, at the Odyssey Theatre in West Los Angeles. With exquisite subtlety and sensitivity in the writing by award-winning playwright Anna Ouyang Moench, it chronicles the relationship of a father and daughter over the course of roughly a decade.
