The 2019 class is 50% women, 29% people of color, and represents 59 countries. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2019.

Led by astronauts Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin, the mission effectively ended the Space Race and fulfilled a national goal set by President John F. Kennedy. This historic feat changed the world forever.

Half a century after humanity's historic first step on the Moon, Smithsonian Channel will launch a six-week celebration of this historic accomplishment. Six-part series APOLLO'S MOON SHOT explores the Moon program through unique and rare access to Apollo artifacts from the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, while a companion augmented reality app enables users to participate in the mission. One-hour documentary THE DAY WE WALKED ON THE MOON relives those iconic 24 hours through the surprising revelations of the men and women who were there and those impacted across the globe. APOLLO'S MOON SHOT premieres Sunday, June 16 at 8 PM ET/PT, and the APOLLO'S MOON SHOT app will be available for download free of charge on iOS and Android platforms this June. Goodman Theatre announces Sydney Chatman as the recipient of the 2019 Michael Maggio Directing Fellowship, an honor reserved for early-career Chicago-based directors. Chatman will gain complete access to the artistic process at the Goodman-from early research and design through the casting and rehearsal process to the opening night. The annual fellowship was established in 2002 to honor the memory and artistry of Goodman Associate Artistic Director Michael Maggio (1951 - 2000) who directed a total of 22 productions at the Goodman and more than 60 productions around the country.

During its presentation at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, PBS announced a celestial programming spectacle sure to excite any space enthusiast. A SUMMER OF SPACEmultiplatform experience, anchored by the highly anticipated AMERICAN EXPERIENCE six-hour film “Chasing the Moon,” and including new science and history programs, will begin in July timed to the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Apollo 11 moon landing. “Chasing the Moon,” written, produced and directed by Academy Award nominee Robert Stone, premieres Monday-Wednesday, July 8-10, 9:00-11:00 p.m. ET. The film tells the story of the space race, from its earliest beginnings to the monumental achievement of the first lunar landing in 1969.

The Gold Coast International Film Festival is offering a respite for federal workers impacted by the prolonged partial government shutdown; free screenings of Oscar-nominated short films in advance of this year's Academy Awards. The screenings, which are open to the general public, will take place on Sunday, February 10 at 6 p.m. in Port Washington, and Wednesday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Great Neck.
