Opera Saratoga Announces DISCOVER!OPERA Program

Opera Saratoga announced DISCOVER!OPERA, a new program to introduce area high school and college students to opera by providing free tickets to select performances as part of the company's annual Summer Festival, as well as access to related programs. This summer, Opera Saratoga will provide free tickets to students for two performances through the DISCOVER!OPERA program.

Long Island's newest theatrical venue The Argyle Theatre (Evan Pappas, Artistic Director) presents the Tony Award winning hit Broadway musical Hairspray with book by Marc O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman at The Argyle Theatre (34 West Main Street, Babylon, Long Island).  Performances are set to begin Thursday, July 12, 2018 for a limited run through Sunday, August 26, 2018.

Opera Ithaca has announced that Zachary James, Founder and General Director of Opera Ithaca, has stepped down from his position. Opera Ithaca has planned a national search for the vacant position while Artistic Director Lynn Craver and Board of Directors Treasurer Dan Taylor will run the company in the interim. Opera Ithaca's previously announced 5th season will continue as scheduled with James returning to the company to direct Hamlet and sing Carl Magnus in a Little Night Music.

ROMEO AND JULIET Return to DC For Annual Free For All

Free For All, one of the capital's cherished annual traditions, will return this summer to Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC), offering two weeks of free performances of the Company's 2016 production of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Directed by STC Associate Artistic Director Alan Paul, whose hit production of Camelot has extended through July 8 due to popular demand, the production will run at Sidney Harman Hall (610 F St NW) from August 21-September 2, providing more than 12,000 people the chance to see the play free of charge.

LA Opera Announces 2018/19 Members Of Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program

Placido Domingo, LA Opera's Eli and Edythe Broad General Director, announced today that he has chosen the performers who will join LA Opera's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program in the 2018/19 season. The artists were chosen from 650 applicants, 200 live auditions and, ultimately, 28 final candidates. The finalists auditioned in April for a panel led by Mr. Domingo that included Sebastian Paul and Marybelle Musco President and CEO Christopher Koelsch, the program's Artistic Advisor Susan Graham and Artistic Administrator Samuel Gelber, along with Stephen King, head of vocal instruction for the program, and Nino Sanikidze, head coach for the program.

Houston Grand Opera Appoints Eun Sun Kim Principal Guest Conductor

Houston Grand Opera (HGO) has appointed Eun Sun Kim as principal guest conductor starting in the 2019-20 season. She will be the first person to hold this position since 1993, when Vjekoslav Sutej completed two seasons in the role. Ms. Kim will conduct at least one opera per season, beginning with R. Strauss's Salome. The position will extend through four seasons. Ms. Kim made her United States debut conducting HGO's season- opening production of La Traviata in October 2017. She is leading the Cincinnati Symphony and May Festival Chorus this week in the Verdi Requiem.

If you let a Chimpanzee drive a speeding locomotive, you'd get a train wreck similar to DIE FLEDERMAUS at Deutsche Oper Berlin. Former operatic tenor Rolando Villazón is responsible for 'directing' this unmitigated disaster of a very expensive new production. Were I not on assignment to review FLEDERMAUS for Broadwayworld.com, I would have left after the first 20 minutes of Act One.
