BWW Reviews: Legendary Marilyn Maye's 'Maye-den Voyage' at 54 Below is Sensationally Smooth Sailing
by Stephen Hanks - Mar 8, 2013
Wednesday night was the second of Marilyn Maye's first 54 Below run (which will continue until March 16) and she sashayed around the stage in front of an almost full house like a woman of 35. Like most of her shows, Maye's performance was a 'live' cabaret Master Class for budding cabaret performers and seasoned professionals alike, and this 'Maye-den Voyage' never went adrift (thanks in part to solid and unobtrusive support from Tedd Frith on piano, Tom Hubbard on bass, and Jim Eklof on drums).

BWW Interviews: Colton Berry Talks INTO THE WOODS, Bayou City Theatrics, and Houston's Theatre Scene
by David Clarke - Jan 3, 2013
With 2013 officially underway, the Houston Theatre Scene is working hard to bring audiences theatrical delights to rival what we saw in 2012. Colton Berry, Artistic Director of Bayou City Theatrics, made a splash when his team opened an 80s Pop-Punk ROCKY HORROR SHOW. That was followed by their highly successful concert of RENT on New Year's Eve. Now, Colton Berry is putting his unique spin on a production of the Stephen Sondheim's classic piece INTO THE WOODS. Keeping a busy, frenetic schedule, Colton Berry spent a few minutes talking to me about his career, Bayou City Theatrics, Houston's Theatre Scene and his upcoming production of INTO THE WOODS.
Glee-Cap: Glease.
by Robert Lawlor - Nov 15, 2012
It's Gleek Lightning, baby! Do you have the chills? I hear they might be able to multiply! Time for what will be an gleektifiying performance of Grease! Grab your poodle skirts and leather jackets, Gleeks! It's so on like Donkey Kong!
Will tells the glee club about his sabbatical and the news does not sit well with Tina or many of the glee clubbers upon finding out that Finn will be his temporary replacement. Talk about understudy problems, right? Marley's costume for Sandy begins to seem far too small, due to Kitty making some alterations and making Marley feel concerned about her body, leading to her to turn to her mom who gives her the love and support she's known for. Finn attempts to fix things with Sue, but she's not having it due to his comment about her baby's disability, thus beginning Sue's battle to take down Grease and Finn. With Sue having booked the auditorium, Finn brings the boys to Hummel Tires and Lube to rehearse "Grease Lightning" allowing the boys to get a "method" approach to their roles. Rachel has landed an audition with a very hip new director and turns to Brody to help her, but Cassandra attempts to sway Rachel away, but Rachel isn't listening to her fiercely bitter dance teacher, thus prompting Cassandra to plot to pursue Brody.

Review - Nymph Errant
by Ben Peltz - Jul 29, 2012
The last time the 1933 West End musical Nymph Errant was revived in New York, the Medicine Show Theatre Company advertised their production with the selling point that they haven't removed any of the show's racism. Now, while going to see a racist musical is not exactly my idea of a fun night out, there is a certain historic value to watching older musicals performed with the texts the authors wrote, opposed to the frequent occurrence of slapping their books with labels like “creaky” or “dated” and having contemporary authors make wholesale revisions to transform them into suitable entertainments for modern audiences.

One of the most popular, highly-regarded stage musicals of all time, LES MISÉRABLES is, to put it simply, a moving, overtly theatrical epic. In this rich-looking--and rich-sounding--tour production, the emotional resonance seems more palpable than ever. The beautifully refreshed 25th Anniversary edition will continue to wow audiences at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts through June 24, with future stops in San Francisco, San Diego and Thousand Oaks, CA this summer.

by Pat Cerasaro - Jun 5, 2012
Today we are talking to the Tony Award-nominated Best Featured Actor In A Musical who has set Broadway ablaze with his much-talked-about portrayal of Judas in Des McAnuff's spectacular revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's seminal rock opera, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR - the electric and charismatic Josh Young. Tracing his journey with the Biblically-themed musical from the hallowed grounds of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada - where he first made his mark on the theatre world with his acting of another iconic Lloyd Webber/Rice anti-hero, Che in EVITA; as well as THE GRAPES OF WRATH - all the way to La Jolla in California, and, now, to eight performances a week on the Great White Way, Young shares his overflowing enthusiasm for the theatrical form and details his life as a performer; a veritable dream come true for the self-proclaimed Broadway baby. In addition to all about his perspective on Judas and his thoughts on the daring and innovative SUPERSTAR, Young also describes working with Tony-winning director Des McAnuff and how his training at the Royal Shakespeare Festival has prepared him for the rigors of a Broadway hit. Plus, Young looks back on past performances and his favorite roles to date as well as shines a light on some of the parts he would consider taking on in the future, both near and far. Plus, Young reacts to his Tony Award nomination, fills us in on genesis of the many new lyrics for the heavenly SUPERSTAR revival, shares thoughts on GLEE, SMASH and much, much more!

BWW Reviews: GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES - Good, But Not All It Could Be
by Roy Berko - Apr 30, 2012
Last year Ensemble Theatre produced playwright Rajiv Joseph's HUCK AND HOLDEN. It was filled with humor and creative storytelling. Those attending Ensemble's newest venture into Joseph's work, GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES, will experience the same type of storytelling, but will probably find the production less satisfying.
BWW Exclusive Blog: CLYBOURNE PARK Behind the Scenes: Day Two (Part 3)
by Clybourne Park - Mar 22, 2012
I have been backstage to several Broadway shows and every time is like the first time. Walking into a Broadway theatre during tech is like walking backstage at Disney World but twice as magical. The audience of the Walter Kerr Theatre, where Clybourne Park is located, is currently filled with tech tables, a table for the director, a table for lights, a table for sound, a table for set, a table for props, a table for stage management, and there are snacks on every table. You might not recognize the Walter Kerr Theatre during tech, the carpet and seats are covered with plastic to protect them.
