Arthur Miller was perhaps the most celebrated American playwright of the 20th century, with masterful plays Death of a Salesman, All My Sons, A View from the Bridge, and The Crucible capturing the darker side of the American Dream, the political zeitgeist of the day and, somewhat ironically, the bonds of the American family -- particularly fathers and sons. His life and career was threaded through the culture of the country in the mid-20th century: he divorced his first wife to marry Marilyn Monroe; he was subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee; he won the Pulitzer Prize and numerous Tony Awards; and he spoke out against the Vietnam War. Miller was seen by many as a moral conscience for the nation.

East West Players Announces MAMMA MIA!

East West Players (EWP), the nation's longest-running professional theater of color in the country and the largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work, is pleased to that announce that the award-winning Broadway musical Mamma Mia! will be part of its 53rd Anniversary Season, Culture Shock, which takes place from Fall 2018 through Summer 2019. With Music and Lyrics by Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Book by Catherine Johnson, Mamma Mia! will be directed by Snehal Desai and close out the season. Mamma Mia! begins performances on May 9, 2019 and runs until June 9, 2019, with opening night on May 16, 2019.

In centuries past, people of means would devote a year or more to THE GRAND TOUR, traveling throughout Europe to broaden their appreciation of art, culture and western civilization. In the 2018-2019 season, Frederick Renz will guide EARLY MUSIC NEW YORK (EM/NY) in its own version of THE GRAND TOUR. Three programs will take place at First Church of Christ, Scientist, while all performances of its annual Christmas program will be at Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, where EM/NY is Artist-in-Residence.

The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut will host its Fall Puppet Performance Series on four Saturdays from Sept. to Dec. 2018, featuring outstanding works of puppet theater by professional puppeteers from across New England and beyond. Each show will be performed twice, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. All performances will take place at the Ballard Institute Theater located at 1 Royce Circle in Downtown Storrs.
