BEWARE THE WOODS...

Sent into the woods to look for strawberries, the hungry Hansel and Gretel are about to embark on a fantastic adventure. As they fall asleep, a fairy-tale world comes to life around them. But the mysterious forest is not always safe for children, and little do they know, something darkly delicious awaits them when they wake... They can’t believe their luck when they come across an edible house made of chocolate – but their host, a witch in disguise, has an insatiable appetite – for young children! Brother and sister must use all their cunning if they are to survive – and break the charm that has captured many children before them.

BWW Review: The Met Anoints Its New 'Fab Five' at National Council Auditions' GRAND FINALS CONCERT
by Richard Sasanow - Mar 2, 2020

Saturday night, I heard soprano Lisette Oropesa deliver an alternatingly delicious and desperately dramatic Violetta in Verdi's LA TRAVIATA at the Met. Less than a day later, she was the emcee at the GRAND FINALS CONCERT of the Met's National Council Auditions--where she was a winner herself in 2005 and “it changed my life,” she recalled--delivering the latest batch of opera babies into the big time.

BWW Review: BEETHOVEN'S FIDELIO at Perth Festival
by Cicely Binford - Mar 1, 2020

West Australian Symphony Orchestra stays busy during Perth Festival season; this year we've already seen and heard them with WA Opera's Hansel and Gretel, Meow Meow's Pandemonium and Bungul. But this weekend WASO gets top billing for its festival entry, Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio. The opera is presented in concert, with text narrated by Eryn Jean Norvill, and features internationally renowned soloists along with WASO and WA Opera Choruses under the baton of Asher Fisch.

BWW Review: HANSEL AND GRETEL at Opera in the Park with West Australian Opera
by Cicely Binford - Feb 28, 2020

Opera in the Park is an event the city of Perth looks forward to every year, and 2020's performance of Hansel and Gretel was no exception. All eyes were on the skies in the lead-up to the night, and though the clouds looked threatening, they only provided a bit of additional atmosphere in the end. Also providing atmosphere was the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, with its open windows showing silhouetted figures going about their business, which served as a new (likely unintended) backdrop for this year's performance.

BWW Interview: Lisette Oropesa, the Met's Courtesan of the Moment, Brings Her TRAVIATA to Town
by Richard Sasanow - Feb 25, 2020

It's been a big year for soprano Lisette Oropesa, with starring roles at major European houses. But in this country, it's something else entirely: She won the Richard Tucker Award and the Met's Beverly Sills Award. That was followed by a pair of name-above-the-title roles, her first at the Met: her role debut in Massenet's MANON and, this week, her house role debut as Verdi's Violetta in LA TRAVIATA.

Alice Bag's 'Sister Dynamite' LP Out April 24
by Abigail Charpentier - Feb 25, 2020

L.A. punk icon Alice Bag has announced her new album Sister Dynamite, due out April 24 on In The Red Records. Her third solo effort, the album marks a thrilling return to the full-throttle punk that Bag pioneered with her legendary first-wave punk band, The Bags. An unbridled celebration of community and the undeniable power in embracing your own truth, the collection confronts some of the most pervasive problems troubling our world today: unchecked privilege and willful ignorance, systemic inequality and fragile masculinity. Bag will kick off a national spring tour on March 6 in Vancouver, joining her like minded sisters Bikini Kill on several dates. Tickets will go on-sale Friday February 28 @ 12:00pm local time.
