In Italy during the 18th century, an average of 5,000 boys were castrated

annually. Almost exclusively, they came from poor families. Their treble voices intact, castration promised those who survived a chance to earn fame and fortune by singing female roles in the opera. A few made it, but most didn’t and were swept aside.

Stiletto, a new musical with Music and Lyrics by three-time Grammy nominee, Oscar and Golden Globe nominee Matthew Wilder (Disney’s Mulan), Book by double Olivier Award nominee Tim Luscombe (Noël Coward’s Easy Virtue, Terrence Rattigan’s The Browning Version and Harlequinade), is set in Venice, Europe’s opera capital.

During the winter of 1730-31, Venice is a city bristling with opportunity where fortunes can be made but life is cheap. A city of lustre and intrigue with plenty of chances of success for Marco, who was castrated as a child to retain his perfect voice. Opera stars being the rock stars of their day, Marco is on course to be an 18th-century Jagger or Bowie, to snag a powerful patron and play leading roles.

In a busy square he meets Gioia, confident, strong willed... and supremely

talented. But despite her musical gifts, being the daughter of an African slave there’s no chance for her to fulfil her dreams. Marco recognises her talent and, sensing that they are both outsiders as well as sharing a love for music, they fall in love.

In an attempt to get her on stage, Marco introduces Gioia to society and his patron, the Contessa Azzurra, but at the end of the evening, a body lies dead and Gioia is hauled off to prison. To free her, Marco must overcome the demons of his past and the morally corrupt forces of the present.

Four recent shows at Don't Tell Mama featured performers either making their debuts on the New York cabaret scene (Evelyn Sullivan and Erin McCracken) or who returned this spring in hopeful anticipation of sharing their artistic vision with audiences (Rob Sutton and Eve Eaton). They no doubt experienced the usual anxiety, trials and tribulations before ultimately taking the stage. And they've come out on the other side relatively unscathed.

Author Raymond Benson Wins 2015 Lovey Award for Best Suspense Novel of 2014 for THE BLACK STILETTO: SECRETS & LIES
by BWW News Desk - Feb 10, 2015

Raymond Benson, best known as the official author of the James Bond novels from 1996 to 2002, received the prestigious 2015 Lovey Award: Best Suspense Novel of 2014 for The Black Stiletto: Secrets & Lies. The novel is the fourth title in the popular Black Stiletto series which chronicles the adventures of the masked vigilante. While Benson does not give his Black Stiletto heroine 'super' powers, she is expertly trained in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and possesses heightened senses. The author expertly moves between past and present, covering 1958 through 1962 referencing the heroine's diaries, to today, where Judy Talbot née Cooper AKA The Black Stiletto, diagnosed with Alzheimer's, resides in a nursing facility. Her son, Martin has stumbled upon the five diaries, and learns of his mother's past. He must now protect his mother while he assimilates the new information, and search for the father he has never known.

BWW Reviews: PAMELA LEWIS Brings Interpretive Heat To Super Cool Billy Joel Songbook Tribute at the Metropolitan Room
by Remy Block - Jan 26, 2015

Pamela Lewis (a.k.a. Champagne Pam), the 2013 BroadwayWorld New York Cabaret Award winner for "Best Female Vocalist" (for her show Daddy's Little Girl), performed her new solo cabaret show, New York State of Mind: The Songs of Billy Joel, in front of a rowdy, revved-up, packed house at the Metropolitan Room on Friday and Saturday, January 16 and 17. The singer with champagne-colored streaks in her long brown hair, Lewis embodies cool. And hot. She's a brassy chick from Long Island who knows who she is and she wants to party with you. In this show, she celebrates her roots, singing the songs of another Long Islander she grew up loving, first for his tuneful pop melodies and later for his words. It's cool when a woman sings an entire show of songs written by a man, doesn't fear using the "wrong" pronouns, and puts her own spin on them by changing the feel, the tempo, and the arrangements. Pamela Lewis does all that with verve and then some in this show.

BWW Reviews: Everybody Say Yeah to the Delightful KINKY BOOTS Tour
by Michael L. Quintos - Jan 6, 2015

When it comes to film-to-stage adaptations, the sassy, Tony Award-winning Best Musical KINKY BOOTS---whose touring company is now on stage at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through January 11---is that rare phenomenon we all wish would happen more often: a stage show that actually improves upon its cinematic source material. On stage, the sparkly stage version certainly amps up the hilarity, high-jinks, and heart, thanks to Harvey Fierstein's even cheekier book that complements Cyndi Lauper's Tony-winning, pop-tastic music and lyrics. Along with the added bonus of Jerry Mitchell's fiery choreography balanced within his even-paced direction, the stage adaptation very much deserves every accolade it has received and continues to enjoy. KINKY BOOTS is, no question, one feel-good, winner of a show.
