Returning to the ENO by popular demand, Jonathan Miller’s iconic production of La bohème, set in 1930’s Paris, carries you away with its intensity. Whether this is your first visit or your fifth, you’ll be swept up in an evening of hope and heartbreak, lit up by some of Puccini’s most exquisite music.

At the heart of the opera is a beautifully simple love story that rings as true now as when it was written 130 years ago.

A young Parisian couple, Mimì and Rodolfo, fall in love. They lead a simple, bohemian life. They’re poor – but want for nothing. Their love will sustain them, or so they believe. But as Mimì grows unwell, illness and poverty test their passion to the limit – and Rodolfo must make a terrible choice.

Miller’s classic production draws on Brassai’s photos of 1930’s Paris. As the photographer captured the city’s shadow-side as well as its glamour, so the production centres the energy of Parisian boho life away from the boulevards.

This mood is perfectly reflected in Puccini’s masterful score, which leads us from the first spark of love to its final flickering embers – through some of opera’s most memorable music, including ‘Musetta’s Waltz’.

We welcome internationally renowned tenor Joshua Blue to the ENO for the first time. He takes the role of Rodolfo, appearing alongside ENO favourite Nadine Benjamin as Mimì. A former Harewood artist and part of our Olivier Award-nominated production of Blue, she stars as the seamstress after singing the role of Musetta in ENO’s 2019 La bohème. Current Harewood artist, Patrick Alexander Keefe, is Schaunard.

The revival is directed by Crispin Lord and conducted by Italian pianist-conductor, Clelia Cafiero, who makes her ENO and UK Opera debut.

In the fifth incarnation of POP's trademark production, a new batch of hand-crafted, vegan, organically-sourced hipsters take the stage for what is quickly becoming an annual Los Angeles holiday tradition. In it, Puccini's 19th Century Parisian garret becomes a present-day Highland Park loft apartment in the hills between downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena during a particularly cold SoCal winter. LA's housing crisis comes to life on stage as the artist, poet, philosopher, musician, and seamstress become a graphic designer, screenplay writer, English major, indie-rocker, and fashion designer dealing with the timeless issues of life, love, jealousy, illness, and overdue bills.

BWW Review: RENT in Ottawa - Vive la Vie Bohème!
by Courtney Castelino - Oct 24, 2019

Broadway Across Canada has finally brought the much anticipated 20th Anniversary Tour of Jonathan Larson's acclaimed rock opera, Rent, to Ottawa. Rent is loosely based on the classic Puccini opera, La Bohème but, instead of 1890s Paris, Larson's scene is set in the gritty back alleys of New York's Alphabet City at Christmastime in the early nineties. We meet the two main protagonists, who are down on their luck. Mark (Cody Jenkins) is an aspiring filmmaker and Roger (Coleman Cummings) is a former musician. They live in a slum apartment, burning items in a steel trash can for warmth. Mark's girlfriend, Maureen (Kelsee Sweigard), left him for a woman named Joanne (Samantha Mbolekwa). Roger's girlfriend, April, committed suicide after she discovered that both she and Roger had contracted AIDS. To make matters even worse, Mark and Roger are about to be evicted by their former friend and roommate, Benny (Jason Taylor Smith), who recently purchased the building with the intention of converting it into a high-tech cyber arts studio.
