MEAN GIRLS is now a ferociously funny new musical from director Casey Nicholaw, composer Jeff Richmond, lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) and book writer Tina Fey.

Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naive newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina's reign, she learns the hard way that you can't cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.

Produced by Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson, Sonia Friedman, and Paramount Pictures, MEAN GIRLS gets to the hilarious heart of what it means to be a true friend, a worthy nemesis, and above all, a human being.

BWW Review: MEAN GIRLS at the Eccles Theater Was Worth the Wait
by Tyler Hinton - December 1, 2021

Originally scheduled to play at the Eccles Theater in August 2020, the national tour of MEAN GIRLS was absolutely worth the wait.  Stuffed to the brim with laugh out loud jokes, earwormy songs, and introspective moments, and boasting top notch performances and production values, it is yet another Broadway-caliber touring production gifted to the Utah theatre community by Broadway at the Eccles.

BWW Review: MEAN GIRLS at The Paramount Theatre
by Jay Irwin - November 17, 2021

Back in 2004, Tina Fey brought us the movie “Mean Girls”, a cute little teen comedy that could have been just another blip in a bevy of teen comedies were it not for the stellar writing of Ms. Fey and a killer cast. Because of that, the movie has become a bit of a classic in the genre. A shining example of how to do it right. Then Fey, along with husband Jeff Richmond for the music and Nell Benjamin for the lyrics chose to convert her classic into a Broadway Musical. They brought over all that stellar writing from the movie, and that’s part of the problem. The other part of the problem is that the new elements, the music and lyrics, don’t quite live up to the writing. So, what we’re left with is a faded carbon copy of the original that while still fun, isn’t quite as “Fetch” as the original.

BWW Review: MEAN GIRLS is a Musical for the Ages (National Tour at Dr. Phillips Center)
by Aaron Wallace - March 3, 2020

It's revitalized. It's funny (with new jokes). It's Facebook - er, Instagram. It's Mean Girls meets 2020. Fey's stage book is so thoughtfully transliterated from its early-aughts source, it's the familiar lines that earn the smallest laughs (except from those who've never seen the movie... shout-out to the couple who nearly died when they heard 'too gay to function,' clearly for the first time).

BWW Review: MEAN GIRLS at Des Moines Performing Arts: A Production you will say is so 'Fetch!'
by DC Felton - October 18, 2019

Sometimes, it's fun to go back and take a look at a past time in our lives, especially if there were good memories from it. If someone were to ask you about a time in your life, you probably aren't going to say high school. When we do look back, many times it is to laugh about the memories we have. a?oeMean Girlsa?? allows us to take a trip back and have a few laughs as we see characters that we have come to love through the 2000 movie, but also that we may recognize as well. This trip back in time is brought to Des Moines thanks to Des Moines Performing Arts where this show opens their 2019-2020 Willis Broadway Series.

BWW Review: MEAN GIRLS at Hennepin Theatre Trust
by Brett Burger - October 10, 2019

Whether you were born in the '80s, '90s or early 2000, you probably still laugh just as hard as you did the first time you watched the cult classic, Mean Girls. Well now, it's back to make audiences laugh in a whole new way with the Tony-nominated Broadway musical of the same name. The show, which originally opened on Broadway in April of 2018, has literally just begun its first national tour with Minneapolis being only the second stop. While adapting something from another medium to the stage can be dangerous at times, Fey has created a hit of a musical that I honestly didn't know if it would work or not.

BWW Interview: Deshawn Bowens of MEAN GIRLS at Orpheum Theatre
by Brett Burger - September 30, 2019

On Mean Girls Day in 2016 - October 3 for those familiar with the movie - it was announced that the cult classic movie, by comedic genius Tina Fey, would be made into a musical. The world premiere would be in Washington D.C. before making its Broadway premiere at the August Wilson theatre in April of 2018. It opened to rave reviews in which Variety reassured fans that 'nothing important has been purged from the story' which is very important, especially if you're a big fan of Tina Fey's hilarious comedy.

BWW Review: MEAN GIRLS Cast Shines Despite Weak Score at SHEA'S BUFFALO Theatre
by Michael Rabice - September 26, 2019

The brilliant comedian Tina Fey has brought her clique of nasty teenage girls to town to open the First National Tour of her Broadway hit musical, MEAN GIRLS. After the success of the film version, Fey and her husband, composer Jeff Richmond, have added music to the story of teenage angst and meanness. The genre has been well populated over the years, with growing up and adolescent relationships proving to be great fodder for shows like GREASE, BYE, BYE, BIRDIE,  HAIRSPRAY, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL and most recently, THE PROM.
