A2SO to Perform Special Concert for Sibelius' 150th Birthday, 11/7

Celebrate Sibelius' 150th Birthday with the Karelia Suite, a tone poem rich with folk melodies and fond memories of his favorite region of Finland. Valse Triste found a welcome home in the world of ballet theater and has been featured in the soundtracks of many films. You'll hear why soloist Roman Rabinovich won the prestigious Rubinstein Piano Competition with this very concerto, Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3, one of the best-known piano concertos of the 20th century. The concert concludes with what Maestro Arie Lipsky calls “the Perfect Symphony,” Mendelssohn's “Italian” Symphony No. 4, where every shining note is brilliant and right.

Broadway star and Ephrata Performing Arts Center alum Catherine Walker will debut her new cabaret show, 'You Have to Start Somewhere: Songs From My Bedroom,' at EPAC's Sharadin Bigler Theatre Saturday, November 7, at 8 p.m. Walker will ultimately be performing the cabaret at venues in New York City and other theaters across the country.

Pittsburgh Opera continues its 77th season with a Mozart favorite - COSÌ FAN TUTTE, or the 'School for Lovers.'  'Britain's Favorite Baritone,' Sir Thomas Allen (the real-life inspiration for 'Billy Elliot') not only directs, but plays the cynical philosopher Don Alfonso in this charming production. Combine a cast as talented as they are attractive with Mozart's brilliant score, and you have a sublime opera experience of poignant comedy. Set in the Italian seaside, the story centers around two couples and one wager - will they be faithful? Two young military officers are confident their girlfriends will remain true to them. Don Alfonso believes otherwise, and unleashes an inventive scheme to find out.
