From the acclaimed playwright who brought to ACT the world premiere of Becky's New Car (2008), comes the Seattle premiere of Yankee Tavern, a taut edge of your seat political thriller written and directed by Steven Dietz. Set in a New York dive bar five years after 9/11, Yankee Tavern tells the story of tavern owner Adam (Shawn Telford), his fiancée Janet (Jennifer Lee Taylor), and two barflies, Ray (Charles Leggett) a conspiracy buff with theories about everything from marriage ("secretly financed by an offshore consortium of big-box stores") to the fall of communism ("a Communist plot!"), and the mysterious Palmer (R. Hamilton Wright), who seems to know more than he should about the events that forever changed the landscape of our country and our psyche.
"A mixture of humor, intrigue, and darkness, Yankee Tavern keeps us guessing about the truth," said ACT Artistic Director Kurt Beattie. "Like all the dim bars, frequented by ghosts and memory, which have enriched the American theatre, the Yankee Tavern becomes that dangerous joint some of us may have visited before, a place where you might overhear, purely by accident, a story you know was never intended for your ears, but one you simply can't stop listening to."
Yankee Tavern marks Steven Dietz's 10th play at ACT (seven as world premieres). Since 1983, Steven Dietz's more than 30 plays have been seen at over 100 regional theatres in the United States, as well as Off-Broadway. Yankee Tavern was commissioned by the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ. Written in 2007, it was a highly praised selection from the 2007 1st Stage New Works Festival before it premiered at Florida Stage in the spring of 2009.
