Sound Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Keiko Green's Nadeshiko to kick off their 2017 Season: AMPLIFY! - Raising Women's Voices, devoted to women writers and directors.
Nadeshiko follows the story of two women: A young woman in Japan during World War II, who takes on the role of caregiver to soldiers soon to be flying to their deaths. A young American woman in 2016, Risa takes on a peculiar gig from Craigslist in order to pay her rent. As personal and sexual boundaries blur, the stories of two generations of women intersect in the discovery of power within idealized Asian beauty.
The term "nadeshiko" refers to a flower which has come to symbolize the personification of an idealized Japanese woman. During the final days of World War II, young women (referred to as the Nadeshiko) were enlisted by the Japanese army to comfort Kamikaze pilots before their final mission.
Sound Theatre Company, coming off their second Gregory Award win for Outstanding Theatre Company of the Year, is thrilled to kick off 2017 with a bold new original premiere from Keiko Green as part of their 2017 Season AMPLIFY! Raising Women's Voices.
Produced in partnership with The Umbrella Project, Nadeshiko was developed with support from the Seattle Repertory Writers Group.

Sound Theatre Company empowers artists to give voice to the dignity and diversity of the human experience - moving audiences toward a more just and compassionate world.
Sound Theatre Company has been repeatedly praised and awarded for its high quality theatrical productions. Sound has won the Gregory Award for Outstanding Theatre of the Year twice in recent years including 2016. Sound's 2017 Season AMPLIFY! Raising Women's Voices is devoted entirely to women writers and directors.
Amplification is a method used by female staffers in Obama's White House to ensure women's voices and ideas are heard and recognized. When a woman makes a key point, other women in the administration repeat it, giving credit to its author. Sound Theatre Company strives to use this method as an inspiration for its future seasons.
