As part of its 75th Anniversary Season, the University of Washington School of Drama is collaborating or co-producing with regional theatres that have grown out of the School or been significantly impacted by the School's alumni. Our first co-production of the season is Beginnings: First Breath, a long-form improv show created in collaboration with Jet City Improv.
Jet City Improv was founded by Andrew McMasters, a 1995 alum of the School of Drama's Professional Actor Training Program. He will be leading the project along with Mary Lindsey McMasters, another School of Drama alum. They have been training and working with a group of undergraduate students on the creation of a long-form improv show.
"It's been incredibly rewarding working with these young actors at the beginnings of their careers," states Andrew McMasters. "They are eager to learn, and share their ideas, which makes for a lively collaboration process. We believe that creating immediate theater with audience involvement is an exciting and memorable form of theater, and we are excited to see where these young actors will go with it!"
The end result will be an ever-changing performance titled Beginnings: First Breath that revolves around the idea of how things begin and the intersection between multiple storylines, movement, and their relationship to time. This unscripted ensemble piece will be created new at each performance using suggestions from that evening's audience.
Beginnings: First Breath opens December 2 and runs through December 6. Performances are Wednesday-Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets range from $12-20 and are available online or over the phone through the ArtsUW Ticket Office, 206-543-4880 / drama.uw.edu/performances. The ArtsUW Ticket Office is located at 1313 NE 41st Street, open Monday-Friday, 11 am-6 pm.
Performances are in the Cabaret Theatre, located inside Hutchinson Hall on the University of Washington campus.
