The Elephant Man comes to Harlequin March 19-April 11 2009. Tickets are $24-$33 with $12-$15 tickets available at the ticket office 1/2 hour before curtain.
The Elephant Man is an examination of how we define ourselves--and others--as human beings. Merrick's is the best known case of an extremely rare disorder, Proteus Syndrome. This play is a sensitive look at Victorian society's reaction to the malformed Merrick and the effect the experience has, both on Merrick himself, but also on Frederick Treves who worked to give Merrick normality.
By the playwright s design, The Elephant Man on stage does not use heavy make-up to clinically illustrate Merrick's deformity, but allows the actor to create a metaphorical image of the young man instead. The play is not about the disorder, it is a thoroughly theatrical portrayal of how we respond to the suffering of the isolated individual and how the individual responds to personal suffering. Where is the measure of a man? Is it in his appearance or in his mind, his heart, his soul...?
