The Seattle Theatre Group will present the Trader Joe's Silent Movie Mondays International Silent Film series! Tickets for each film are now available for purchase at STGPresents.org.
This extraordinary series explores the beauty, complexity, and universality of international silent film. Within a fourteen-day span, the series travels all around the world first visiting France, then Japan, and finally India.
The series begins it's journey in France with, The Passion of Joan of Arc/La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc(1928) directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer from Denmark and stars the magnificent, Renee Jeanne Falconetti. It is widely regarded as a landmark of cinema history, with breathtaking art direction, one of the most expensive sets ever built for a European film at that time, and brilliant cinematography.
The second destination of the film series brings us to Japan, showcasing the 1933 Japanese drama, Apart from You (Kimi to wakarete) written and directed by Mikio Naruse. In this breakthrough film, Naruse turned his camera on the lives of working women, which he would continue to do throughout his career. The film portrays a difficult mother-son relationship, a story of ill-fated love, and an inside look at geisha life.
In celebration of the 100th year anniversary of Indian film we end our journey with the Indian film A Throw of Dice (Prapancha Pash), is the 1929 film by German director, Franz Osten, and Indian-born actor/producer Himanshu Rai. Based on an episode from the Indian epic The Mahabharata, this lively movie is about two kings vying for the love of a hermit's daughter. The production used over 10,000 extras, 1,000 horses and 50 elephants provided by the royal houses of Jaipur, Udaipur and Mysore and includes one of the first kisses in an Indian film.
We will have pre-film live music for both Apart From You and A Throw of Dice, but all films will be accompanied by The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, played by Jim Riggs.
