Fifteen years ago, Tony Driscoll had this crazy idea for an extra bloody, comic, over the top, and irreverent take on Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. At the time, GreenStage was still a young company known for Shakespeare in the Park. Titus was the company's first indoor production. It was a huge amount of bloody fun, and ever since then, we have wanted to take another stab at the show. Now, with 15 years of growth under our belt, it's time to resurrect Shakespeare's bloodiest comedy...uh... tragedy.
So why this kind of take on such a brutal play? Here's what director Tony Driscoll has to say, "Possibly, growing up in the latter part of the twentieth century desensitized me a bit. Maybe the great American tragedies of OJ Simpson, Jeffery Dahmer, and John Wayne Gacy, have affected me in an adverse manner. Beheadings and fecophilia are all the rage on the interwebs nowadays. Could that be it? I don't know. But judging from this cast and crew, who have taken my best and given me better - and sometimes (to my elation) given me much worse - I think perhaps I'm not alone."Cast Details
