Seattle Repertory Theatre announces the release of applications for their 2017/18 Professional Arts Training Program.
For more than 20 years, Seattle Repertory Theatre's Professional Arts Training Program has helped young professionals break into the world of non-profit arts. Members of the Professional Arts Training Program are fully integrated into their departments and engaged with all aspects of the company, leaving the program with the experience, tools, and the confidence they need to begin a successful career.
Applications will be accepted now through February 10, 2017, and most internships offer a full-time opportunity of at least 40 hours per week from September 2017 through May 2018 with compensation. Applications are available online at seattlerep.org/internships.
The Professional Arts Training Program is a season-long internship program designed to give young professionals the opportunity to apply what they learned in school to the non-profit arts world. Prospective interns may apply to positions in the following areas: Artistic/Casting, Artistic/Literary, Company Management, Costumes, Development, Education, Lighting Design, Marketing and Communications, Production Management, Props Design, Scenic Arts (Paint), Stage Management, and Technical Direction. New this year, Seattle Repertory Theatre has expanded their program to include the possibility of part-time positions in Development, Education, Lighting Design, Marketing and Communications, and Technical Direction.
"We are making a conscious effort to ensure that our internship program is more equitable," said Education Director Arlene Martínez-Vázquez. "We recognize only a handful of people are able to volunteer their time for 40 hours a week with minimal compensation. Our part-time options will provide young professionals with the same learning opportunities while also allowing them to hold an additional part-time job to sustain themselves, if need be."
Interns undertake responsibilities as members of the staff, contribute ideas, participate in department and staff meetings, and complete projects under the guidance of their supervisors. Interns also participate in professional workshops and seminars, which provide contact with theatre staff, guest artists, and members of the Seattle arts community. Staff members guide the work of each intern to help prepare them for a career in professional theatre. "I loved my time as an intern at Seattle Rep," said Matt Giles, PATP class of 2011/12. "I was able to work in a variety of capacities throughout the building and with staff members from all departments. The hands-on experience made me a better theatre artist, and observing some of the top theatre practitioners in the nation create art taught me lessons I would never have learned outside of this organization. Now, in my position as Associate Producing Director, I constantly find myself realizing how transformative my intern experience was. It's one of the main reasons I'm doing the work I do today."
