Seattle Musical Theatre is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the American premiere of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, music, lyrics, and book by Richard O'Brien. With Director Steven Fogell at the helm and with music direction by Kim Dare, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW runs today, October 9-18, 2014 at Magnuson Park. Tickets ($25) are available at www.seattlemusicaltheatre.org or by calling 1-800-838-3006.
This sexy cult classic, dripping with campy humor and nose-tapping references to science fiction and B horror movies, is busting down the doors of convention on SMT's stage, flavored with a dark circus/steampunk twist. Squeaky clean couple, Brad and Janet, have some car trouble and are forced to seek refuge in the gothic castle of the transvestite mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Upon their arrival, Frank-N-Furter and his kooky and bizarre staff of Transylvanians open up the couple's minds in ways they never imagined. The musical's rock'n'roll score includes hits such as "Time Warp," "Sweet Transvestite," "Dammit Janet," "Over at the Frankenstein Place," "Toucha Toucha Toucha Touch Me," and more.
The show was written in 1973 and achieved critical and commercial success in London, starring a then-unknown Tim Curry. Afterward, the musical made its way to Los Angeles, New York (where it was nominated for a Tony and three Drama Desks), and San Francisco, and was then was adapted into the cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1975. It is the longest running release in film history. The show has since enjoyed a couple international tours and a Broadway revival in the early 2000s, always endeavoring to make audiences shiver with antici...pation.
SMT's production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW boasts the outrageously irreverent sketch comedy duo Dos Fallopia (Lisa Koch and Peggy Platt), called "a rollercoaster ride of hysteria" by BroadwayWorld.com. Many in Seattle know them from their Carol Burnett-esque holiday show Ham for the Holidays at ACT. Koch, a singer/comedian who has shared the stage with Steve Martin, Dave Brubeck, and the Indigo Girls, and Platt, voted Seattle's Best Comic for nine years who has opened for Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, and Kathy Griffin, will play Hans the Butler and the Narrator, respectively.
The ROCKY HORROR cast also includes Joel Domenico as Frank-N-Furter, Claudine Mboligikpelani Nako as Janet, Garrett Dill as Brad, Nathan Brockett as Riff Raff, Stephanie L. Graham as Magenta, Sophia Franzella as Columbia, Paul Bryan as Dr. Everett V. Scott, Hisam Goueli as Rocky, Mandy Rose Nichols as Eddie, and a rash of Transylvanians: Ellen Dessler, Brynne Geiszler, Elizabeth Grant, Allyson Jacobs-Lake, Dustyn Moir, Amanda Mae Norman, Heather Refvem, Larissa Schmitz, and Alex Ung.
Seattle Musical Theatre veteran Director Steven Fogell directed Scrooge: The Musical and Seussical at SMT and served as the Artistic Director and Education Director at Bainbridge Performing Arts for 17 years. Musical Director Kim Dare returns to SMT after music directing Altar Boyz, and other local credits include Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson at ArtsWest and Balagan's smash hit production of Spring Awakening. The creative team also includes choreographer Gerard Theoret, light and sound design by Caleb Dietzel, costumes and sets by Steven Fogell, and Arin Larson as Costume Assistant.
SMT's season continues with FIDDLER ON THE ROOF directed by Scot Charles Anderson, music direction by Mark Press, playing November 7-23 2014; SWEET CHARITY directed by Harry Turpin, music direction by Michael Nutting, playing February 13-March 1, 2015; and concludes with A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM directed by Vince Brady, music direction by Joel Kurzynski, playing April 10-26, 2015.
The mission of Seattle Musical Theatre is to engage and entertain the community by producing new and traditional musicals. The theater nurtures local talent by providing training and artistic development opportunities for children, youth, and adults from all walks of life. SMT's vision is to enrich the entertainment and educational value of live theater in the Northwest region; provide a premiere environment for nurturing artistic and technical talent; and develop the Magnuson Park theater facility as a key cultural resource for civic, arts, and other community organizations. SMT at all times will strive to demonstrate and inspire these values among the Board of Directors, staff, artists, volunteers, patrons, and donors.
