Formed in 2008, Red Baraat is a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound -- a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk, and hip-hop. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat's spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve. And is being returned to them in cities all over the world, as word spreads of the band's incredibly powerful live performances.
Sunny Jain first made a name for himself as a rising star in the jazz world - awarded the designation of Jazz Ambassador by the U.S. Department of State and the Kennedy Center, and appearing regularly in Downbeat magazine critics polls as he helmed his own bands and kept time for folks like Norah Jones, Kenny Wollesen, and Kyle Eastwood. He played with Junoon -- Pakistan's pioneering Sufi rock band, and traveled the world as a kit drummer.
The Gipsy Kings consist of two bands of brothers: the Reyes (Nicolas, Canut, Paul, Patchai, Andre) and the Baliardos (Tonino, Paco, Diego). The Reyes and Baliardo boys were the offspring of Spanish gypsy families that had fled into France to escape Spain's Civil War. They grew up roaming the south of France, working harvests and making music.
Jose Reyes - father of the GK's Reyes - sang alongside guitarist Manitas de Plata and did much to popularise flamenco internationally: John Steinbeck, Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso, MiLes Davis and Salvador Dali were amongst the duo's admirers. Jose split from Manitas in the 1970s and formed Los Reyes with his teenage sons. His death devastated the Reyes yet lead to their fortuitous encounter with the Baliardos at the St. Marie de la Mer Gitan pilgrimage. On that warm night, as they passed the guitar, shared songs and wine, history was shaped.
Universally hailed as a thrilling new figure in music for his edgy, lo-fi debut, The Headphone Masterpiece, back in 2002, Cody ChesnuTT is a soul troubadour whose frank, socially conscious ruminations on life continue to challenge popular notions of what modern soul music can look and sound like: a raw storyteller for the people wearing a guitar and a toothpick-chewing smirk; a wide-eyed, intense soul brother in a crazy-fly get-up singing about bedraggled love in the land of Lost Angeles - he's all of that, but wiser now while still wearing poetic license on his skin like a battle scar.
A decade earlier, Cody explored the Atlanta's early '90s R&B scene as a singer, and then toiled in his LA-based band, The Crosswalk. His time spent alone exploring raw new sounds in his bedroom finally paid off in 2002 with the release of The Headphone Masterpiece. Industry tastemakers like music writer dream hampton (and The Roots drummer and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon bandleader) Questlove took to the record immediately, hearing in Cody's music the kind of emotional intensity and savvy, irreverent wordplay that was sorely missing in Black music in the early 2000s as the neo-soul movement sputtered to a near halt, losing several of its key players to their own hiatuses. A song from The Headphone Masterpiece was re-tooled as "The Seed 2.0" for the Roots' seminal album Phrenology, exposing Cody's music to a wider mainstream audience.
