ACT presents the season finale and theatrical event of the year, the South and South East Asian saga of Ramayana. The epic hero tale, Ramayana tells the story of Rama, a young prince on a quest to rescue his beautiful wife from an evil king. A unique spectacle like nothing Seattle stages have seen; ACT will combine vivid costumes, battle scenes, puppetry, choreography, and re-imagined environments in a huge collaborative effort combining some of Seattle's finest talent. The world premiere production is co-directed by Kurt Beattie and Sheila Daniels with choreography by Maureen Whiting, and a new script interpretation by the award winning playwright Yussef El Guindi and Stephanie Timm.
Bringing this epic to life has been a labor of love for Artistic Director Kurt Beattie as he assembled a large ensemble of collaborators from various artistic disciplines. For over two years ACT's Affiliate Artist Working Group has been shaping this classic work of literature into a stage play using cultural and performance influences from all over the world, and locally more than 70 Seattle artists have contributed to the process through readings, creative collaborations, and workshops.

Shadows of the Ramayana in Puppets, Politics, and Film
Sunday, October 7, 4:00pm
Tickets: $10 - $15 Included in the ACTPass
Ramayana traditions have been known in Java, Indonesia's largest island, and Bali, Indonesia's most desirable tourist destination, for at least 1500 years. But the stories changed as they made their way from India to Java and Bali. When Java became Islamic in the 15th and 16th centuries, Ramayana stories began to incorporate Islamic elements. Shadow theatre, a long-lived and much beloved performance tradition, was the vehicle that conveyed Ramayana stories over the centuries. Professor Laurie Sears explores how Ramayana traditions continue to thrive and impact Islamic Javanese culture.
