New theatre company Pony World announces its debut production: Emerald and the Love Song of the Dead Fishermen by BrenDan Healy. Presented in association with Seattle theatre mainstay Annex Theatre, this world premiere brings Seattle's history to life with an eerie, romantic twist. This fantastical new play offers original sea chanteys, puppets, and a dose of heartache. Emerald and the Love Song of the Dead Fishermen opens August 6th and runs Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through August 29th. Tickets range from $10-$15 and can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com or at the door. All shows will be performed at Annex Theatre: 1100 E. Pike St. in Capitol Hill. Shows begin promptly at 8pm.
A stylized, modern maritime odyssey, Emerald and the Love Song of the Dead Fishermen tells the story of a corporate coffee shop barista in search for her father who drowned at sea the day she was born. According to sea superstition, on the Day of Dead Fishermen all the fishermen lost at sea will walk again on a legendary island. Emerald Fasma will have this one chance to meet her father and learn the truth behind the family myths she'd been told all her life. She is joined in her journey by her disaffected coffee shop manager and a woman would-be fishing captain in drag. As they search, they encounter ghosts, mermaids, and corporate enforcers. Written by seattle-born, award-winning playwright BrenDan Healy, the play blends whimsy with poetry, combining the traditions of mythology with a sardonic depiction of modern life in the Northwest. Puppets help bring the history and superstitions of Seattle to life. Though not a musical, the play features original sea chanteys composed by Sean Patrick Taylor.Tickets: $15 general, $10 for students, seniors, military, and TPS members
