Tinariwen with Dengue Fever Tue. April 4, 7:30pm - Tickets $40-$55 ** SOLD OUT **
Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall www.tinariwen.com
A bass chord and a chorus of male voices open the dance, followed by youyous, cries and handclaps. The powerful melodies of Tinariwen have become the soundtrack for a whole generation of exiled Touareg youth living in Algeria and Libya. These extraordinary guitar-poets from the southern Sahara desert blend blues, rock and pop with Berber and Arabic influences to create an altogether hypnotic concert experience.
Trace Bundy Fri. April 7, 8pm - Tickets $27-$42
Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall www.tracebundy.com
Guitar virtuoso Trace Bundy must be seen to be believed. His music is poetry in motion, using harmonics and looping to confound even the most accomplished music lovers as to how one person can perform such intricate guitar arrangements with just two hands. It's no wonder, then, that fans have dubbed him the "Acoustic Ninja" and that he has shared the stage with the likes of Brandi Carlile, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Neko Case. With a growing virtuoso reputation, Trace has garnered over 36 million views on YouTube and has sold over 120,000 albums to date on his own independent record label. Trace's witty banter and stage presence deliver an unforgettable live concert experience that is not to be missed.
Max Raabe and Palast Orchester Sat. April 8, 8pm - Tickets $50-$70
Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall www.palast-orchester.de/en/
Dashing, dapper and debonair, Max Raabe might have walked straight out of a 1920s Berlin cabaret. With his elegant baritone voice, he brings to life the songs and style of a bygone era - the timeless melodies by legends like Cole Porter and Irving Berlin - and delivers them with nostalgic flair and a good dose of dry wit. Max is joined by Palast Orchester, a group he formed with fellow music students at the Berlin University of the Arts.
Jóhann Jóhannsson featuring American Contemporary Music Ensemble Thur. April 20, 7:30pm - Tickets $30-$40
Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall www.johannjohannsson.com
Jóhann Jóhannsson is a Berlin-based composer originally from Iceland. His varied and eclectic output includes commissioned works for Bang on A Can, Theatre of Voices and the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. His debut album Englabörn appeared in 2002 and he has since released five solo albums on the labels Touch and 4AD. He has also composed music for the theatre, dance and film, including the film score for the Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything (2014), for which he won an Academy Award.
After a period spent mostly concentrating on film scores, this year will see the release of several new music projects, some of which have been a long time in the making. Jóhannsson is working on his first studio album in four years since his last release, Miner's Hymns, in 2011. "People seem to need labels, but they can be needlessly reductive," says Jóhannsson. Ever since he was 18, when he started performing in rock bands in Reykjavik, he's been looking for ways to break out of rigid categories. The music he's written has always explored the boundary between natural acoustic sounds and electronics, with the goal of exploring and unifying these opposites.
Jacob Collier Fri. April 28, 8pm - Tickets $30-$40
Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall www.jacobcollier.co.uk
