Forbidden Love and Revenge come together in the Seattle Premier of LILIES OR THE REVIVAL OF A ROMANTIC DRAMA. Local Jewell Productions (LJP) closes their fifth year with the critically acclaimed play, running March 25 - April 9, 2016.
This critically acclaimed play was written by Quebec playwright Michel Marc Bouchard and translated by Linda Gaboriau. Featuring an all-male cast, themes of love, jealousy, revenge and forbidden love color this story that begins in 1952 inside a Quebec prison. There, Bishop Bilodeau has been invited for what he believes is a confession from convict Simon Douchet. But no sooner does the Bishop enter the confessional than he is locked in by other inmates and forced to watch them stage a play. A play set in 1912 that tells the story of when Bilodeau and Simon were friends and a love triangle between the two and another friend, Valier, ended in a death for which Simon has been accused and imprisoned. Simon, along with the prisoners, attempt to force the Bishop into owning up to his actions and the part they believe, he played in the death of Valier. Premiered in 1987 in Quebec, the English translation by Gaboriau was published in 1991 and earned critical praise. It was then made into a film titled Lilies where it won Best Canadian Film in 1996 and was nominated for Outstanding Film in 1998 by GLAAD Media Awards.
