Annex Theatre will present Girl, a generative, site-specific production directed by Mary Hubert and created by The Ensemble.
Think of the classic hero's quest: a rousing call to adventure, legendary challenges and temptations, a road full of trials and perils, transformation, atonement, and an ultimate resolution. Think of Aladdin, The Princess Bride, or Star Wars. The difference here? The heroes are young women in modern-day Seattle, who must navigate a male-dominated world and fight their battles in a society that imposes constraints on their gender and generation. This devised ensemble adventure asks, what does it take to be a modern heroine?
Director Mary Hubert has assembled a phenomenal ensemble of eight women to build this immersive journey that will take you into the belly of Annex. In just 75 minutes, Audience members will explore every nook and cranny of the theatre in an intimate quest unlike any other: one that is entrenched in the trials that a modern day woman takes on. The audience moves through the space following music, movement and story, and must ultimately choose the hero they want.
The Ensemble has been working together since February to create a story entirely from scratch. Drawing on female stereotypes and archetypes, Joseph Campbell's Hero's Quest, and the challenges of today, they have crafted an experience unlike any other.
The eight-person acting ensemble consists of Kiki Abba (Forward Flux Productions, MAP Theater, Seattle Repertory Theatre), Haley Alaji (Forward Flux Productions, Cornish Theater of the Arts), Gabriela Aleman (Ghost Light Theatricals, Circle in the Square, Lakewood Playhouse), Erin Bednarz (The Umbrella Project, Intiman Theatre Festival, ACTLab, LiveGirls! Theatre), Katherine Bicknell (The Horse in Motion, quiet, Seattle Fringe Festival), Lauren Brazell (Gender Tender, The Pocket, LoLo Ramone Burlesque), Amy Escobar (Thistle Theatre, Theater22, On the Boards), and Kayla Walker (Village Theatre, Wooden O, Intiman Theatre Festival).
Mary Hubert is a freelance director and producer. Most recently, she collaborated with The Horse in Motion and the University of Washington on And Hilarity Ensues!, and recently directed Lazarus and His Girlfriend at the Seattle Fringe Festival. Mary has also had the opportunity to work with The Satori Group, OCC, Washington Ensemble Theatre, Seattle Public Theatre, The Seagull Project, The Young Playwrights' Festival, and On the Boards. She will be directing at the Pocket Theater this fall.
Annex Theatre is a democratic collective of theatre artists dedicated to creating bold new work in an environment of improbability, resourcefulness, and risk. Annex Theatre produces new plays by living playwrights, radical reinterpretations of classic scripts, and ensemble-generated non-linear spectacles. Now in its Capitol Hill venue, Annex originally opened its doors in 1987 in a former dance studio on 4th Avenue in downtown Seattle. Since then the theater has produced hundreds of world and Northwest premieres.
Girl performs August 2nd through August 17th on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Industry Night on Monday, August 15th. There are two shows every night at 7 and 9 pm. Tickets are $5-$20. Tickets available at www.annextheatre.org.
