Seattle Rep today announced the cast and creative team of its final production of the 2018/2019 Season, Tiny Beautiful Things, based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed (Torch, Brave Enough, Wild, "Dear Sugar") and adapted for the stage by Academy Award nominee Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Instant Mom). Co-conceived by Marshall Heyman ("Dietland"), Thomas Kail (Hamilton, Fox's "Grease Live!"), and Vardalos, and directed by Courtney Sale (Artistic Director for Seattle Children's Theatre), Tiny Beautiful Things will run May 17 - June 23, 2019 (opening night is May 22) on the Leo K. stage. Single tickets are on sale now (starting at $17) and are available through the Seattle Rep Patron Services Office at 206.443.2222 or online at SeattleRep.org.
Tiny Beautiful Things follows the relationships between an anonymous advice columnist named Sugar and the many real-life readers who pour out their hearts to her. Nia Vardalos adapts Cheryl Strayed's book into a luminous play that personifies the unfathomable questions that are at the heart of being human. Of the work, The New Yorker said in the play Sugar "manages astonishing levels of empathy without dissolving into sentiment, while Variety calls the play "a theatrical hug in turbulent times." Many say tissues recommended.
"Being in the world of Tiny Beautiful Things reminds us of our deep, ever evolving humanity," Director Courtney Sale commented. "It requires of us a profound act of listening; something in our current clime, we are not often afforded. Cheryl Strayed's advice does not present as 'advice.' She has the uncanny ability to forge connection across language and circumstance. I hope audiences will leave the play feeling bolder, kinder, and more alive."
Seattle Rep's cast includes Julie Briskman (The Seagull Project's The Three Sisters) as Sugar, Justin Huertas (Lizard Boy) as Letter Writer 3, Charles Leggett (A Raisin in the Sun ) as Letter Writer 1, and Chantal DeGroat (Well) as Letter Writer 2.
The creative team includes L.B. Morse (Scenic Design), Alison Heryer (Costume Design), Robert J. Aguilar (Lighting Design), Sharath Patel (Sound Design).
