18th & Union is pleased to announce that the venue will host Everything to Me, a documentary photographic exhibit by Seattle-based photographer Gemina Garland-Lewis, opening Monday, October 15, 2018.

Everything to Me is a documentary photography project partnered alongside community outreach and efforts to increase clinical care for both people and their pets experiencing homelessness in Seattle. It is based upon the premise that a deeper understanding of the bond that people share with their animals can help lead to better options for them to seek and receive care for themselves and their pets, and that housing status alone is not an indicator for a person's ability to care for an animal.

Photographer Gemina Garland-Lewis said, "The project was borne out of observing the high number of homeless youth with animals in Seattle's U District and an interest in understanding this relationship better from a visual storytelling perspective. Based in King County, which holds the country's third highest concentration of persons experiencing homelessness, as well as includes Seattle - a city that has more dogs than human children - Everything to Me explores the relationships that are formed with animals, the different roles they play in people's lives, and the specific struggles and barriers that people face while experiencing homelessness with their pet."

About the Photographer

Gemina Garland-Lewis is a Seattle-based photographer, One Health researcher, and National Geographic Explorer. Both her photography and research explore the myriad connections between humans, animals, and their shared environments. She is passionate about integrating the worlds of visual storytelling and research to develop new ways of communicating social and environmental issues to broader audiences and building unique platforms for education and outreach. Her photography, writing, and stories have been featured by National Geographic News, National Geographic Adventure, and REI, among others. She works part-time with the Center for One Health Research at the University of Washington on issues at the human-animal-environment interface and guest lectures on the human-animal bond in homelessness in the UW course "One Health: Human and Animal Health in a Changing Environment." Garland-Lewis was an invited speaker in the Town Hall Seattle lecture series in 2016 and is the recipient of the Society of Professional Journalists Western Washington chapter's 2018 Passion Projects grant for her project Everything to Me.
