The American Romanian Cultural Society (ARCS) pays homage to one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century: Romanian born Dinu Lipatti. On April 27, 2017 at 7pm Benaroya Hall's acoustically rich Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall hosts this very special 100th anniversary musical celebration. Lipatti fulfilled a startling variety of roles - pianist, composer, teacher and critic -before his untimely death from cancer at age 33. Posthumously elected to the Romanian Academy, Lipatti brought outstanding contributions to classical music interpretation and composition. His pianism demonstrated an ideal synthesis of a composer's analytical insight and expressive inwardness. Internationally acclaimed violinist and pianist Alexandru Tomescu (violin) and Angela Draghicescu (piano) pay tribute to Dinu Lipatti in an exquisite chamber concert featuring works by Beethoven, Bach, Bartok and Gershwin as well as the Seattle premiere of Dinu Lipatti's rarely performed Sonatina for Violin and Piano.
This event is presented by the American Romanian Cultural Society in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute New York and with the support of the Romanian American Society of Washington State (RO-WA). Tickets are $35.50 and available at www.benaroyahall.org or call (206) 215-4747.
About Dinu Lipatti
Born in Bucharest, Romania, pianist and composer Constantin "Dinu" Lipatti (1917-1950) is regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. He fulfilled a startling variety of roles - as pianist, composer, teacher and critic - with tireless devotion and integrity, despite the early and relentless encroachment of the cancer that took his life unexpectedly. It is not surprising, given his death at the age of thirty-three, that Lipatti achieved cult status in the years following his death. His approach to the piano was one of utter fastidiousness, striving for perfection in every aspect of his interpretation and performance. During his lifetime, he was admired by many pianists such as Wilhelm Backhaus, Edwin Fischer, Wilhelm Kempff, and Arthur Schnabel. Lipatti's pianism is an ideal synthesis of a composer's analytical insight and expressive inwardness that brought outstanding contributions to the classical music interpretation and composition of today.
