Tony Award-winning actress Dinah Manoff will be teaching a series of classes through BPA this fall. Manoff has over 30 years of experience acting, directing and casting.
These six-hour workshops, given once a month over the course of six months will begin in September and offer a variety of opportunities. This series offers a great schedule for those who don't have time to commit to a weekly class and encompasses a range of instruction from developing basic acting skills to selecting appropriate material for auditions.
Classes will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month with the exception of February 2017, when students will meet on the first Sunday. Classes will be held in the portable behind BPA and students are instructed to wear comfortable clothes and bring a lunch.
Offerings include the following:
The Nuts and Bolts of Acting - Sunday, September 11, 2016
This workshop will provide a foundation for actors who would like to learn the "nuts and bolts" of the craft. Using a variety of techniques with practical application for scenes and monologues, this class is perfect for actors of all levels, from those with little or no experience to more seasoned actors who want to brush up on the basics.
Constructing a Character - Sunday, October 9, 2016
Character development is more than just putting on a costume or speaking with an accent. It is about being real while playing someone who may not be like you at all. In this workshop Dinah uses creative exercises and improvisation to teach students how to build believable characters - those that are similar and dissimilar to those participating. Students will leave with invaluable tools for assembling characters from the inside out.
Monologues with Muscle - Sunday, November 13, 2016
There is much more to a monologue than standing up and giving a speech. Participants will learn how the tools of "sensory work" and "unrelated action" can take a monologue from a stiff presentation to an interesting and captivating piece.
Step by Step, Scene Study - Sunday, December 11, 2016
Using scene samples from great playwrights like Neil Simon, Tennessee Williams, Lillian Hellman and David Mamet, and more, Dinah will teach students how to interpret a scene's rhythms or "beats," and the importance of knowing a scene's "subtext" and "intention".
The Song's the Thing -Sunday, January 8, 2016
Dinah teams up with local talent vocal coach and pianist Corinna Munter for this workshop. The ladies will present both acting and singing techniques designed to teach students how to express themselves and communicate a story effectively through song.
The Art of Auditioning - Sunday, February 5, 2016
The Art of Auditioning is an invaluable workshop for actors of all levels. Participants will learn to audition with confidence and receive tips on choosing the best material to spotlight their talents. Actors are encouraged to bring a 1-2-minute monologue to class.
Limited to 14 students (per class) and recommended for ages 16 and older, The Actors Tool Belt will be offered at $125 per class or at $100 per class for a package of three or more.
